Serbia and Kosovo reached an accord to normalize their relationship on Friday, following a EU (European Union) facilitated talk between Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic and the Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci."The negotiations have concluded. The content has been initialed by both prime ministers," said EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who mediated the talks."The agreement today is historic and marks an important moment in the relationship between Serbia and Kosovo as well as in their relations with the European Union," said the President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy.

He said that the "break-through" agreement represents a major achievement as the parties have committed to jointly work towards a future in the EU.
"I reconfirm Serbia's and Kosovo's EU perspectives and underline that the Member States of the European Union have set out an ambitious agenda for both parties in 2013," said Van Rompuy.
Jose Manuel Barroso, the President of the European Commission, said that the agreement will pave the way for the EU to take decisions on the next steps on the European path of Serbia and Kosovo, and he urged the two sides to implement it quickly.
Kosovo unilaterally declared independence in 2008. However, Serbia refused to recognize it as an independent country. The EU set it a precondition for Serbia's EU aspirations that the country must normalize relations with neighbors, especially Kosovo.
