‘STEWARDESS’ BRANSON TO FINALLY SERVE ON AIRASIA X FLIGHT
The once in a life time opportunity at MYR1,308* (AUD399*) one way will be up for grabs for a good cause
Sepang, 8th April, 2013- Aviation history will be made on Sunday, 12 May, 2013, as AirAsia X’s flight D7 237 departs Perth for Kuala Lumpur at 06:50 (WST) with Sir Richard Branson serving on board as a flight attendant.
The Virgin Group entrepreneur, Sir Richard Branson will finally shave his legs, slip into a sexy red skirt and take to the skies as a female flight attendant next month as part of a long-anticipated wager with AirAsia.
More than two years after losing a friendly bet to AirAsia Group Chief Executive Officer, Tony Fernandes on who had the better Formula 1 team, a sultry Sir Richard – complete with make-up, a pair of high heels and freshly smooth legs – will strut his stuff as a flight attendant on a special AirAsia X charity flight from Perth to Kuala Lumpur.
Sir Richard and Tony Fernandes had wagered on which one of their Formula One racing teams (then Virgin and Lotus) would finish ahead of each other in their debut season of the 2010 Formula One Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi, and that the loser would serve as a female flight attendant on board the winner’s airline. Tony Fernandes’ then Team Lotus finished two spots above Sir Richard’s Marussia Virgin Racing team in the final rankings.

‘Stating the Mutiny:
Prostitutes and the cantonment bazaar in the making of 1857′
by
Prof. William Pinch,
Wesleyan University, Connecticut, USA.
Abstract:
Standard accounts of the military mutiny at Meerut on May 10th, 1857, have longpointed to the key role that prostitutes (or, depending on whom you read, courtesans)played in encouraging the sepoys to rise up in revolt. The talk will examine the way thisparticular historical narrative has evolved over the past 150 years, and will juxtapose itto other accounts of women in and around the cantonment bazaar in the mid and late1850s. The goal of the lecture is to move us from a discussion of the familiar “why” of1857 to the stranger “what” of military culture, especially as it was enacted in theunusual and increasingly rigid and divided hybrid space that was the mid nineteenth-century north Indian cantonment. The talk hopes to show that, whether or not theystarted the military mutiny at Meerut, women were pivotal to the emotionaltopography of the soldier’s world.
Speaker:
Prof. William Pinch is Professor of History at Wesleyan University. He earned his PhDin History at the University of Virginia in 1990. He has written two books, Peasants andMonks in British India (California 1996) and Warrior Ascetics and IndianEmpires (Cambridge 2006), many articles and essays, and is the editor of Speaking ofPeasants: Essays in Indian History and Politics in Honor of Walter Hauser (Delhi 2008). Prof.Pinch’s teaching focuses on South Asian history, world history, religion and history, andmaritime history. This year he is a Fulbright-Nehru Senior Research Scholar based inNew Delhi.

‘Dr. Kotnis ki amar kahani and after:
Images of China in Bombay cinema’
by
Prof. Patricia Uberoi,
Institute of Chinese Studies, Delhi.
Abstract:
China is India’s largest neighbour, yet this country has had minimal representation in the Indiancinematic imagination. This presentation focuses on V. Shantaram’s Dr Kotnis ki Amar Kahani (TheImmortal Story of Dr Kotnis, 1946), a much-cited and probably little watched Hindi movie thatextols an iconic moment in the twentieth century history of Sino-Indian relations: the participationof the Indian Medical Mission to China in China’s liberation struggle against Japanese occupation, and the tragic death in the field of one of the Mission’s members, the eponymous Dr D.S. Kotnis. In the ultimate analysis, the film appears to authorize the symbolic appropriation of the Chinese‘Other’ to the paternalistic order of the Indian family just as, in the early years after Independence,India was to patronize the assimilation of China to the world order of modern nation-states. This,as we know, proved to be an unsustainable partnership, setting the stage for the motif of betrayalthat permeates Chetan Anand’s Haqeeqat (1964), the next major cinematic rendering of India–Chinarelations. Some five decades on from the border war which forms Haqeeqat’s subject matter, Indianpublic sentiment continues to be dominated by this deep sense of betrayal and mistrust.
Speaker:
Prof. Patricia Uberoi has taught Sociology at the University of Delhi and Jawaharlal NehruUniversity, and retired as Professor of Sociology at the Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi, where she was also editor of the well-known sociology journal, Contributions to Indian Sociology. She is currently Honorary Fellow and Vice-Chairperson of the Institute of Chinese Studies, Delhi, where she has been actively involved with the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar (BCIM) TrackTwo regional dialogue. She has published widely on aspects of family, kinship, gender andpopular culture, including cinema, in respect to both India and China.

Street vendors reject proposal of Identification through Biometric Aadhaar number & National Population Register (NPR)
Call for rejection of National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), Aadhaar, NPR and National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID)
Kolkata/New Delhi: On the concluding day of the 3 day workshop on Impact of Globalization and International Financial Institutions (IFIs) on Hawkers and various sectors, the leaders of street vendors from across the country expressed their strong disapproval of the biometric identification of street vendors through initiatives like Aadhaar/Unique Identification (UID) Number and National Population Register (NPR). Parliamentary Standing Committee on Urban Development has been misled by some NGO owners into expressing support for anti-citizen and ant-vendor biometric identification which has been deemed illegal, unethical and contemptuous of Parliament by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance in its report to the Parliament on December 11, 2011.
The participants at the workshop disapproved of NGO owners who support biometric identification through initiatives like Aadhaar/Unique Identification (UID) Number and NPR. The following Public Statement was endorsed and issued in Kolkata on April 5, 2013:
Public Statement
Why all Freedom Loving Citizens should oppose National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), UID/ Aadhaar, National Population Register (NPR) and National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID)?
1. It is a threat to privacy, civil liberties, federalism, national security, sovereignty, decentralization and constitution
2. It facilitates emergence of a Surveillance State based on Database, Global Information Architecture for Convergence, Property based Democracy to advances corporate fascism by ‘commercial czars’ and ‘private territorial armies’
3. It is fraught with dangers of genocide and communal crisis through tracking and profiling akin to misuse of census data in Germany in 1930s
4. It is guided by undemocratic international financial institutions and defence policies of other nuclear weapon holding countries
5. The collection of biometric data is a violation of fundamental rights as it turns citizens into subjects and treats them worse than prisoners
6. It is anti-poor and anti-citizen as it dismantles existing social service entitlements and is a tool for exclusion
7. It promotes outsourcing of governmental functions
8. There is an imminent danger from surveillance and identification technology companies – which are beyond national and international legal control- indiscriminately collecting biometric data like fingerprints, iris scan, voice print, DNA etc
9. It compromises citizens’ rights of present and future generations
10. It is an unnecessary and wasteful project for citizens as it transfers public money to private parties
11. It is without democratic, parliamentary, legal and constitutional sanction
The 57 signatories of the public statement included Shaktiman Ghosh of National Hawkers Federation, Kolkata, Ravi Shankar Dwivedi, Azad Hawker Street Vendor Union, Allahabad, Kshetri Tama Devi, Manipur, Ramu Bhai, Bokaro, Raj Kumar Shahin, All Punjab Rehri Union, Sunil Ghatale, Amravati, Maharashtra, Dhananjay Kumar, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune, Shirish, Nagpur, R B Singh Rajpoot, Delhi, Arun Kumar Khuntia, Samblpur, Odisha, Subhash Chand, Palwal, Haryana, Brajbandhu Pradhan, Puri, Odisha, S Babu, Bangalore, Dhanpat Kumar, Bodhgaya, Bihar, R Sevvilam Paridhi, Coimbatore, A D Ameer, Vizag, Alka Senger, Allahabad, Rekha Marik, Marjina Ansari, A Jayamma, Sirisala Venkat Mohan and other leaders of street hawkers and vendors.
They rejected the recommendation “The Aadhar card may be linked towards identification of street vendors” as dehumanizing. TheParliamentary Standing Committee on Urban Development has failed in its report to fathom the grave genocidal ramifications in its submitted to the Parliament on March 13, 2013.
The report was the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Bill, 2012 was introduced in Lok Sabha on September 6, 2012 was referred to this Committee on 10th September, 2012. It failed to recognize the illegality of collection of biometric data.
Gopal Krishna of Citizens Form for Civil Liberties (CFCL) addressed the workshop on the ramifications of biometric profiling being pursued by Home Ministry and the Planning Commission. He underlined that it is being undertaken at the behest of World Bank’s eTransform Initiative and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) to secure safe havens for commercial czars and private territorial armies through convergence of private sector, public sector and citizens sector. He expressed dismay at the ignorance of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Urban Development which does not know the difference between a 12 digit biometric identifier located in Centralized Identity Data Registry (CIDR) and NPR and pre-existing at least 15 identity proofs which give legitimacy to the Parliament and the governments.

Neither Human right activists Nor Govt turned up for Pak Hindu : VHP
480 Pak Hindus are worst sufferers, Visa expiring today (08/04/13) but no respite
New Delhi April 7, 2013. Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) today criticized centre & the state Government of Delhi alongwith Human right groups for not helping Hindus came from Pakistan after a long story of their sufferings, tortures and inhuman behavior by Zihadi forces and their government agencies. The state vice president of VHP Delhi shri Mahavir Prasad Gupta today asked all Govt agencies, human right groups and socalled social workers, who usually cries for terror groups, Zihadis and non hindus, that why are they kept mum for these Hindus.
According to shri Vinod Bansal, the media chief of VHP Delhi the Visa for all 480 Hindus escaped from Pakistan is going to expire on 08/04/13. We have appealed all concerned central & state government ministries alongwith national and UN Human right commissions for the safety, security, food, shelters and Indian citizenship for all those worst sufferers of the Zihadi forces but no one have turned up. We thought that even after sending these letters last month all have kept mum because the sufferers are hindus, non others. However leader of opposition in Delhi Vidhan sabha shri VK Malhotra raised this issue in legislative assembly last week but it is very unfortunate that not even a single political leader or a govt. agency have yet visited the place. A detailed discussion in the last secession of parliament on issue of atrocities on Hindus in Pakistan also seems to became a futile exercise, he added.
The secretary General VHP south Delhi shri Vijay Gupta appealed all concerned citizen of the country to come forward to help the victims of Zihadi Pak Muslims and send the food, utensils, medicines etc to the relief camp setup by the social worker shri Nahar Singh at 16, Ambedkar colony, Bijwasan, New Delhi-110 061 or contact us at 09212376123, 09210110863or 09212126309.
