UN Climate Change talks in Doha enter its final stage

The UN Climate Change talks in Doha are entering into its final stage with sub groups on contentious issues like Kyoto Protocol, Climate financing, Long term co-operative action are working hard to reach to an agreed outcome if not a decision by over 194 countries. UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon is meeting the representatives of regional groups and individual nations to save the climate change talks at Doha.

Indian  West Asia Correspondent reports, the Working group Kyoto Protocol is scheduled to firm up its recommendations for its plenary session tonight.

Two years ago in Durban rich nations had agreed to cut down their greenhouse gases emission below 5 percent at 1990 levels by the end of this year, complete the negotiations by 2015 and renew the term of Kyoto Protocol by 2020.

Now only a handful of nations led by EU which contribute to around 15 percent of emission have agreed for a renewed commitment.

Japan, Canada, Russia, New Zealand have said no to the second commitment while developing countries are opposed to fixing any emission norms for them.

The contact group on climate financing will take a call on when and how the rich nations will release funds for tacking climate change issues.

G-77 wants routing the funds through UN agencies and not by the private sector, as suggested by rich nations.

The group on Long term co-operative action, LCA has given top priority to address technology and Intellectual property rights over the concerns raised by India.
