CPI condemns the lathicharge and teargas on the people in Delhi,
The
Central Secretariat of the Communist Party of India has today issued the
following statement to the press:
The Secretariat of the CPI condemns
the continued lathicharge and teargas on the people in Delhi, who are
protesting against the rapes and demanding strong action against culprits. The
people’s anger is fully justified. Delhi and other cities have become unsafe
for our women. The number of rapes in Delhi, the capital of India in 2011 is
572, according to National Crime Records Bureau. In the last five years Delhi
recorded 2,620 rapes. What a shame?
Delhi chief minister expresses her helplessness as the
Delhi police is under Union home ministry. The statements of Union home
secretary and Delhi police are irresponsible and refusing to accept the
accountability. This is not acceptable.
The 23-year old para-medical student’s gang rape in a
running bus and throwing her out of bus along with her friend after being
severely beaten up and tortured, naturally caused anger among the people, who
are demanding capital punishment to the culprits and strong action for the
security of our women in the capital city. In the last ten years less than 25
per cent of rape cases, convicts are punished and 75 per cent let off because
of lack of evidence. Police failed to build up the cases properly. There is a
possibility of negligence and surrender to culprits from the department.
The demonstrations of students, women and general
public are spontaneous. This is a symbolic signal of the anger of the people
against the miserable failure of the home ministry and the government of India
in protecting the honour of our women and maintaining normal law and order.
CPI demands strong action which itself alone can give
concrete assurance to the people that such heinous crimes against women will
not be repeated in the Capital and other areas. The home minister and prime
minister should take responsibility and reply to the Nation.
