Dear friends,

Rapists -- like those found guilty of raping Delhi's Daughter -- say they believe women don't have the right to say no. This is outrageous! It's time to end this culture of rape. Send an urgent message to Communications Minister Shri Milind Deora to support a mass public education campaignbefore Delhi's Daughter is forgotten:

Rape is still a horrific fact of life for far too many women and girls across India. Why? Because rapists -- like those found guilty of raping Delhi's Daughter -- believe women don't have the right to say no, according to a new UN report. Let's challenge this crazed culture of rape!

Communications Minister Shri Milind Deora hasagreed in principle to use the might of the government to ensure everyone knows that a woman always has the right to say no, but he hasn't agreed a budget or a timetable. With today's court case fixing the nation's eyes on solving the rape crisis for good -- let's tell him that the time to start a massive public education campaign is now.

It takes political will and investment to root out the culture of rape, but it can and must be done to end this war on women. Send an urgent message to Minister Deora asking him to get moving right away -- before Delhi's Daughter is forgotten -- and then send this email widely:

India's rape crisis is out of control: a girl or woman is raped every 20 minutes, and in most cases, the rapists get away without punishment. Despite the massive outcry in January, politicians have dragged their feet on this problem -- but with the media spotlight shining on the bestial bus gang rape, we can jolt them into action.

The court has handed down its verdict to the guilty, but courts are simply addressing the symptom, not the root of the problem. Only mass public education can change the mindset that lets a rape epidemic flourish across India. We need true political leadership, starting with an extensive public education plan backed with real resources. Countless successful campaigns -- on attitudes to violence against women, vaccinations and smoking -- in India and across the world have shown that culture really can change when tackled through an effective campaign backed by a strong government commitment and funds.

Nothing less than women's place in society is at stake, and Shri Milind Deora has the chance to lead a total transformation of how we treat our wives, mothers and daughters. Send him a message now:

More than one million citizens across the world have stood with India's women and girls to demand a massive public education campaign to end the culture of rape. Even Bollywood stars have joined the call as well as hundreds of Avaaz members and allies in the streets in Calcutta last month. We've convinced Shri Milind Deora to do his part to end the rape epidemic -- now let's make sure he acts fast.

With hope,

Meredith, Aldine, Sam, Marie, Antonia, Oli, Ricken and the whole Avaaz team
