NCRB 8,233 women died in disputes over dowry payments in 2012

4092013
National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 8,233 women died in disputes over dowry payments given by the bride’s family to the groom’s family at the time of marriage in 2012 – that works out to be one death per hour.
The report comes as the world’s attention remains on women’s rights issues in India after a number of high-profile rape cases shocked the nation and the globe.
Thousands of Indian women die every year because the groom’s family deemed the dowry amount to be inadequate. Many of the women are doused with gasoline and burned to death. According to AFP, dowry demands continue even years after the marriage ceremony.
The number of deaths has been steadily growing, rising from 8,093 in 2007 to 8,618 in 2011.
The NCRB is responsible for the collection and processing of crime statistics at the national level.
Law does not allow the paying and receiving of a dowry, but century-old traditions remain in place despite legal boundaries.

Quake of 6.0 m hits off western Canada coast

A 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck off Canada’s Vancouver Island on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey reported. A tsunami is not expected after the quake, which hit 124 miles (200 kilometers) west of Port Hardy in British Columbia. The earthquake was identified as shallow, as it occurred 7.5 miles (12 kilometers) below the seabed. The western coast of Canada experiences small tremors on a relatively regular basis because of its proximity to the Queen Charlotte Fault, which marks the boundary between the Pacific and North American tectonic plates.

Global market plunge on Israeli test missile launch

Markets immediately fell on Tuesday after the Russian Defense Ministry reported the launch of two ballistic missiles in the eastern Mediterranean. The FTSE 100 slumped down nearly one percent (7.01 points), but later recovered, when the launch was claimed by IDF to be a joint Israeli-US early warning system test, refuting fears of a start to a Syrian offensive. Stock markets in Germany and France experienced similar losses. Traders reacted to fears of escalation of war in the Middle East as far as India, as the BSE Sensex fell nearly 4 percent (651 points) on “geopolitical worries,” media reports.

Half of Venezuela without power

4092013

A blackout left approximately half of Venezuela without power Tuesday. Government officials blamed the incident on a break in one of the nation’s major power transmission lines that provides electricity to the western and central regions of the country. Twelve of Venezuela’s 24 states were left in the dark, although authorities expected the lights to be turned back on within hours. The outage did not affect Venezuelan oil production. President Nicolas Maduro took to Twitter, claiming the evidence indicated “the far-right has resumed its plan for its electrical strike against the country.”

Philippine president cancels China visit over ‘impossible demand’

Philippine President Benigno Aquino has publicly announced the cancellation of a planned trip to a Beijing trade fair after Chinese officials expressed preconditions that Manila withdraw a UN arbitration case over disputed islands in the South China Sea. Philippines foreign ministry spokesman Raul Hernandez said that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, along with two other diplomats, had shared the conditions necessary for Aquino to attend the China-Asean Expo – an annual event which this year celebrates the Philippines as a “country of honor,” AP reported. The Philippines will instead send a delegation to the trade show, headed by the country’s trade secretary. “The president stood firm in the defense of the country’s national interest,” said Hernandez.

Magnum Opus ‘Buddha’ to air on Zee TV

Grand Historical Magnum Opus ‘Buddha
to air on Zee TV from 8th September
Billionaire BK Modi produces Buddha with Zee TV
A Side of Prince Siddharth’s Life
One knows Little About …
“Believing in Yourself is Not a Religion … It’s a Way of Life!” If a man who walked the earth in the year 500 BCE had the vision to say something that remains so relevant in the year 2013, it is no wonder, then, that he is counted amongst the most important personalities to have been born in the recorded history of India – Buddha!
We have all read about Buddha at one point or the other. Yet, so much remains to be explored about this powerful, magnetic thought leader who woke up to the ‘Ultimate Truth’ under the Bodhi Tree. For instance, did you know that it was Prince Siddharth who pioneered elephant warfare in his time? Do any of us even know what he was like, as a child? What were the influences that shaped his thinking as a youth? We know the leader and his school of thought, but little do we know about the beautiful person within.
Presenting Siddhartha’s illustrious journey of being born in the lap of luxury as a prince to his growing years to denouncing his throne and living the life of an ascetic to attaining ‘The Awakening’ is Zee TV’s next historical magnum opus ‘Buddha’ produced by Spice Studios.
Starting 8th September, Sunday mornings will never be the same again as ‘Buddha’ will air at 11 AM on Zee TV. Told in 52 gripping episodes, this series will be an entertaining action drama that showcases the unexplored life of Buddha as Siddharth. The show has an international appeal with its grand scale, opulent sets at the Film City spread over a sprawling 5 acre plot, an impressive cast with renowned names like Kabir Bedi, Samir Dharmadhikari, Nigaar Khan, state-of-the-art 3D graphics used to re-create the look and feel of a bygone era, well-researched costumes bought out of Jodhpur and Jaipur and customized jewellery sourced from Patna that bring alive the majestic lifestyles of the royal family of Kapilavastu.
Mr. Subhash Chandra, Chairman of ZEEL and Essel Group said, “ZEE (Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd) is delighted to partner with Dr B. K. Modi (Spice Studios) to present a new series which is a never-before-seen biopic on television on the life of ‘Buddha’.  We have been working with many researchers and experts on the subject.  Buddha is shown as one who has great compassion, is completely impartial, and embraces all living beings without discrimination.  In today’s fast paced lives, where so much conflict exists in society, Buddha’s teachings are perfectly suited to the challenges man is currently facing. Beyond doubt, each and every faith globally believes that Buddha’s philosophy helps you find your own path to awakening … that Buddha is a spiritual guide who gives everyone the opportunity to enter the path of liberation and enlightenment.  Our worldwide network of channels will offer an instant connect to millions of people as the philosophy of Buddha is universal.”
Dr B. K. Modi, Founder & Chairman, Spice group and Producer of “Buddha” said, “Today, youth of the world needs to be empowered and be very confident, fearless and believe in themselves. They are the future of the country and should rise above all the barriers of religions and traditions. And nurture in them qualities of compassion, equality & to create a violence free world”.
Amongst the cast, veteran actor Kabir Bedi will be seen making a comeback to acting after a long hiatus. Kabir has an important role to play in this epic drama. “I am playing a sage who foresees the coming of the Buddha.” says Kabir. Very few people know that the actor has a karmic connection with Buddhism. His mother has spent 15 years as a Buddhist nun in Tibet. Kabir himself has lived a life of a monk for a year in Burma. He feels a deep connection with the role and gave an instant nod when approached for it.
The handsome Samir Dharmadhikari, most remembered for his portrayal of King Gagadhar Rao, the husband of ‘Jhansi Ki Rani’, will play the righteous King Suddhodana, father of Prince Siddhartha.  Nigaar Khan will dazzle as always in the negative role of Mangala, the vicious and cunning aunt of Prince Siddhartha. Actors Deepika UpadhyayGungun Uprari and Siddhartha Vasudev will play the roles of Queen Mahamaya, Queen Prajapati and Dronadhan respectively.
It is interesting to note that ‘Buddha’ was initially supposed to be made into a film. Spice Studios had begun work on a film based on the same subject with filmmakers Shekhar Kapur and Ashutosh Gowariker helming the research and script development. However, Dr. Modi explains his choice of medium saying, “The scope of television today is larger than films and we wanted Buddha’s story to unfold in all its splendour and reach out to the largest denominator of people possible. Only TV can give us that reach … especially ZEE, with its international reach spanning over 169 countries!”
Starting 8th September, discover new aspects about Prince Siddharth’s journey to enlightenment as the historical drama ‘Buddha’ airs at 11 AM every Sunday, only on Zee TV!

DOWN BY LOVE directed by Tamás Sas (2002), colour, 90 mins.
Twenty-four-year-old Éva has lived for years in the flat left to her by her parents. The only meaning in her restricted life is her secret affair with Tibor, a forty-four-year-old married man. The unusual plot of the film is told in an unusual way. With great vigour a single actress manages to bring a feeling of desperate loneliness to her 90-minute performance.
September 17
CONTROL directed by Nimród Antal (2003), colour, 106 mins.
This film is a special mixture of tale and reality, down below, under the ground. The story is about a strange young man, Bulcsú, his fellow inspectors, who are all without exception likeable characters, a rival ticket inspection team, racing along the tracks, perhaps about love and starting anew.
September 24
FRESH AIR directed by Ágnes Kocsis (2006), Colour, 109 mins.
Viola is still a beautiful woman. Angéla is ashamed of her mother. Communication between them has become almost impossible. Probably, in secret, they both are in love with the protagonist. Viola works where no one else wants to. She is looking for a real man whom she could love. Angéla would like to design nice dresses. She desires something different. Another life. Fresh air.

Hungarian film, directed by György Balogh (2012), colour, duration: 99 mins.
This modern adaptation of the classic Hungarian youth novel by István Fekete is an amazing and timeless adventure story.
It’s a coming-of-age tale about two boys who spend their summer vacation down at the lake. Skipper is rewarded with the countryside vacation by his parents because of his good school grades. He is a typical urban teenager and completely clueless about nature. The old ranger, Uncle Matula, who is wise and humorous, begins to teach Skipper all he needs to know about getting along in the country, just in time for his best friend Bunion to arrive. The friends discover the wilderness and become young adults by the end of the summer.
This film is for everyone who ever longed to escape to the wonders of nature. Filled with the beauty of the Hungarian countryside, you can almost smell the food.

EXPRESSIONS OF…
Group exhibition for four Indian artists
Sangeeta Marwah, Ritika Chopra, Shruti Vij and Ravneet Kaur
“You are a person, beautiful and unique… express yourself, strengthen yourself, kick yourself, wet yourself with tears, dry yourself with confidence, say how you feel, love like it’s real, be who you are, never let anything make you believe your life isn’t worth living…”
EXPRESSIONS MAKE US… they are what set us apart from other creatures. Sometimes we let affection, go unspoken, sometimes we let our love go unexpressed, sometimes we can’t find words to tell our feelings, especially towards those we love the best. Creativity and self expression generate happiness. Four of us have got together to celebrate the myriad shades of Life- EXPRESSIONS.
This exhibition is an attempt to bring some self expressions which emerge from inspiration that is sparked by the reflection of our artworks.

ORFEO, CROSSING THE GANGES by Monteverdi
with a Hungarian lead singer
The Neemrana Music Foundation presents an Opera with a lead singer Dávid Szigetvári (tenor) from Hungary, who won the First Prize of the Johann Sebastian Bach International Competition Leipzig 2012.
“Orfeo” is considered to be one of the first in opera history (1607), an opera in which Monteverdi merged the arts of poetry, of theatre and of music for the first time.
In the story of ‘Orfeo, crossing the Ganges’, Orfeo travels to India and falls in love with Eurydice, dancer consecrated to the service of Lord Shiva. He kidnaps her and marries her, thus provoking the fury of the Grand god: the cobra around Shiva’s neck kills Eurydice. Orfeo’s quest in the beyond to find the beloved, is like a crossing of the Ganges to the holy city of Varanasi. Presumptuous victim of his illusions, Orfeo fails and is put to death.
