Prof. Srihari, Advisor and Consultant on roads and safety, Government of Karnataka threw light on the importance of good roads. India records one of the highest number of accidents in the world. He said that inland water transport must be encouraged.
Ideally, national highways should not pass through cities; ring roads should be built. Adequate budget should be allocated in advance and projects must be implemented on time to avoid escalation of cost and increase the traffic. Other challenges faced are land acquisition, getting enivironmental clearance, numerous litigations, delay in payment by the bank, conflict of interest and lack of ownership.
All the 2-lane highways must be converted into 4-lane, 4-lane highways to 6-lane ones. Restaurants, toilets and fuel stations must be constructed at every 20kms. In few years, Nagpur will be air hub of India. By 2022, we will have a stretch of 15600km National Highway.
