Two major earthquakes which struck off the west coast of northern
Sumatra in Indonesia on Wednesday afternoon caused at least five
fatalities and several injuries, disaster officials confirmed on
Thursday.
A spokesman for Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency said five people died from heart attacks during emergency evacuations after an 8.6-magnitude earthquake struck about 434 kilometers (269 miles) southwest of Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh province on the northern tip of Sumatra. It was later followed by an 8.2-magnitude aftershock.
