Syria’s newly appointed Prime Minister Wael al-Halki was sworn in Saturday before the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the state-run SANA news agency said.
Assad appointed al-Halki Thursday after sacking the former breakaway Prime Minister Riad Hijab, who defected last Sunday and sought refuge in Jordan.
Halki, a 48-year-old gynecologist, acted as secretary-general of the Baath party’s branch in the southern Daraa province between 2000 and 2004.
He was appointed as head of the doctors’ syndicate in 2010 and later served as health minister. The defection of Hijab, despite attempts by the government to downplay its significance, is considered as a humiliating blow to the recently-formed government.

U.S. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has picked Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan as his vice presidential running mate, U.S. media reported Friday, citing Republican sources.Romney’s campaign told supporters at about 7 a.m. via an iPhone app that the seven-term congressman would be the Republican vice presidential nominee.
A formal announcement would be made at 9 a.m. (1300 GMT) Saturday in Norfolk, Virginia, during a public event aboard the renowned USS Wisconsin, a decommissioned World War II-era warship.
NBC, CNN, AP and several other U.S. media outlets reported that Ryan is Romney’s choice for running mate, citing Republican and Romney campaign officials.
Mitt Romney to announce his vice presidential  running candidate on Saturday morning in Norfolk, Va..His campaign announced late Friday night but Romney plans to make the announcement at 8:45 a.m. when he tours the USS Wisconsin. Congressmen Rob Portman and Paul Ryan as well as former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty are said to be on Mr Romney’s shortlist
His trip campaign will visit the states of Virginia, North Carolina and Florida before finishing in Ohio.In a little over two weeks’ time, Mr Romney will be formally confirmed as candidate at the Republican Party convention in Tampa, Florida. His bitter rival in the primaries, Rick Santorum, will be a speaker at the convention, it was announced earlier in the week.
At the end of the month, Republicans to gather in Tampa for a four-day convention that will provide the former Massachusetts governor a chance to reintroduce himself to the country and reset the race on his terms.Romney’s effort gets under way in Virginia, where he begins a four-day bus tour through swing states on Saturday with his wife, Ann.
Romney campaign announced that he will reveal his running mate at 8:45 a.m., when he tours the USS Wisconsin in Norfolk, connecting with blue-collar America, the tour is designed to help Romney shed the caricature that the Obama campaign has tried to draw of him as an elitist who looks out only for the wealthiest. Romney plans to swing by a bakery in Ashland, Va. on Saturday and  stage a rally Sunday at the NASCAR Technical Institute in Mooresville, N.C., near Charlotte.
Romney told reporters: “Bus tour, it’s great! It’s great to be out campaigning. . . . Campaigning is the most fun, is the most enjoyable and rewarding.” Romney then clapped his hands and returned to his seat at the front of the plane. “Back to my yogurt,” he said.Romney’s focus on the middle class will carry into the convention at the end of this month. The national spotlight will shine brighter in Tampa than at any other moment in Romney’s campaign, and his supporters are betting that many voters will form their impressions of him then.
“To borrow a phrase, the convention has the potential to be an ‘Etch a Sketch moment,’ ” said Mark McKinnon, a longtime Republican image-maker who advised the presidential campaigns of George W. Bush and Sen. John McCain. “Conventions often wipe the slate clean. A crucial bloc of undecided voters, though there aren’t many this year, will just start paying attention when the convention starts.”
Romney’s advisers are putting the finishing touches on plans to reintroduce the candidate to the nation and have filmed new videos with Romney and his family at his lakefront vacation home in Wolfeboro, N.H., and are devising a prominent role onstage for Ann Romney and their extended family.

Indonesia Says ‘No, Thanks’ to More Sukhoi Fighters

MOSCOW, August 9 (RIA Novosti)
Indonesia will buy no more Sukhoi fighter jets from Russia, opting instead for U.S. F-16s, Air Marshal Eris Herryanto told Flightglobal aviation news portal on Thursday.
The Indonesian Air Force has 10 Su-30 and Su-27s with six additional fighters on the way.
Money is being made available to accelerate the refurbishment of its existing fleet of 15 Lockheed Martin C-130s, as well as buy four C-130Hs from Australia and upgrade them, and purchase more Indonesia Aerospace CN-295 transports, said Herryanto, who is secretary general of the Indonesian Defense Ministry.
“We are waiting for 24 F-16s from the USA. With those, we will have enough aircraft in our fighter inventory for the next 20 years. And that means we have enough Sukhoi fighters for now,” he said.
“Indonesia has also invested in South Korea’s K-FX program, which will produce fighters to replace aircraft like the [Northrop] F-5s and F-16s. We aim to buy enough K-FX fighters for three squadrons of 16-22 aircraft each. That will cover our long-term requirements.”
Sukhoi’s press service said they were not aware of Indonesia’s plans.
A source at United Aircraft Corp. (UAC) who spoke on condition of anonymity said he was not surprised by Indonesia’s decision, as there has been no discussion with Jakarta for any more Sukhoi sales.

Su-30 Multirole Fighter
Indonesia recently bought six Su-30 fighters to be delivered within the next three years (two a year).
The country’s Air Force will thus have a total of 16 Sukhois, which require spare parts, servicing, maintenance, etc, he said.
Any joint aircraft project with South Korea is unlikely to materialize soon, the source said.

Sprinter Usain Bolt Golds euphoria in Jamaica

Edit Published August 11, 2012 by sagarmedia
Jamaicans broke into wild celebrations in the streets of the capital as they watched the island’s sprinters pull off a historic clean sweep of the 200-meters at the London Olympic Games.
Usain ‘Lightning’ Bolt, 25, and Yohan ‘The Beast’ Blake, 22,or the ‘Double B’ duo as they have been dubbed in Jamaica, left the rest of the field in their wake yesterday to take gold and silver, only days after they did the same in the 100-meters.
Adding to the feat, a third Jamaican, debutant Olympian Warren Weir, won bronze in the 200-meters, underlining Jamaica’s dominance in the sprint events. Hundreds of Jamaicans danced in the streets, honked horns, waved flags, hugged each other and screamed with delight, after the black, green and gold Jamaican colors left the world behind. Bolt became the first man to complete the sprint double at back-to-back Olympics. Now, expectations are rising Jamaica will take gold again in Sunday’s 4 x 100-meter relay final to round off what is shaping up to be the most successful Olympics in Jamaican history.
Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, who television cameras showed sharing in the joy as the three Jamaicans passed the finish line first, praised the athletes. She said once again Jamaican athletes have done them proud. The Prime Minister said it is a wonderful day for Jamaica’s athletics.
Bolt, who turns 26 later this month, was already a legend in his home country before his latest golds, and is the island’s top celebrity after reggae’s Bob Marley. Bolt’s signature archer-like victory pose has become a symbol of Jamaican pride.
In the last week the number of followers on Bolt’s Twitter page shot up from 700,000 to more than 1 million. The Olympic triumph added a special luster to Jamaica’s celebrations this week of its 50th anniversary of independence from Britain, including gold in both the men’s and women’s 100-meter finals.
Athletes are held in special regard in Jamaica, which has a long record of Olympic success since its first participation in the 1948 London Games. At the 2008 Games in Beijing, Jamaica had its biggest medal haul, taking home six golds, three silvers and two bronzes, ahead of Canada (population 34 million) and Brazil (population 196 million).
Bolt won three golds – in the 100- and 200-meter competitions, as well as the four-man 100-meter relay – all in world record times.
