First Critical Appraisal Skills Programme in Public Health Journalism by UNICEF,

First Critical Appraisal Skills Programme in Public Health Journalism by
UNICEF, IIMC, University of Oxford, GIGH and Thomson Reuters Foundation
New Delhi, 25th April 2016—The first-of-its-kind ‘Critical Appraisal Skills’ (CASP) course certificate in Public Health Journalism and Communication, was awarded to 40 budding media professionals from the Indian Institute of Mass Communication here today. Conceptualised by UNICEF, the CASP was designed in partnership with the University of Oxford, Thomson Reuters Foundation, George Institute of Global Health (GIGH) and adapted by IIMC in India.  The course is a skill-building initiative for media professionals, and offers a unique opportunity to specialise in evidence-based reportage on public health issues.

In his message, Shri Sunil Arora, Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said, “It is important to build skills of media professionals, especially media students, as it would have a visionary impact on reportage leading to more evidence-based coverage of crucial subjects such as public health and related development issues”

The course, currently offered to public health professionals in the UK, has been adapted for the first time in India for media professionals under the GAVI-Health System Strengthening Plan 2014-16, to create awareness around routine immunisation and child survival.

In his inaugural speech, Mr. Louis-Georges Arsenault, UNICEF Country Representative, spoke about an urgent need to work in partnership with media for highlighting critical issues of health and child survival. “Our consultations with media and journalism schools across the country gave us key insights on the need to make a valuable yet simple course which enables a scientific and evidence-based approach to reporting public health issues, especially those concerning child survival.”

On this momentous occasion, Shri K.G. Suresh, Director General, IIMC, while congratulating the students, said, “This sensitisation of media students and journalists is important and will enable them to write more substantively on public health issues. So when IIMC was chosen to do the pilot for the programme, we gladly accepted to co-create and manage this pilot project with UNICEF and with other international and national partners.”

IIMC customised and piloted the course at its campus in Delhi, over a period of three months. The students received the certificates in the presence of Dr. Pradeep Haldar, Deputy Commissioner, Immunisation, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Mr. Louis Georges Arsenault, UNICEF Representative to India, and Shri K.G. Suresh, Director General, IIMC.

Bearing in mind the instrumental role of media in supporting and enriching quality discourse on Public health and hence increasing acceptance of critical health initiatives, this programme has been undertaken by UNICEF, in association with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and partners to promote and support a holistic environment for visibility around RI, under the Government of India’s flagship Mission Indradhanush programme.

In his address, Dr. Pradeep Haldar, Deputy Commissioner, Immunisation, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, said, “India’s Universal Immunization Programme is one of the largest immunization programmes in the world and a major public health intervention in the country. Our focus is to give maximum protection to the children against Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPDs) through MissionIndradhanush. These life-saving vaccines will not only improve the health of our children but also reduce hospitalization and other conditions associated with VPDs among children, thereby reducing the health cost burden of the country”.

The evaluation of the programme showcased how overall more than 90% of the students found the course experience to be satisfactory and highlighted key learning which will help to make the course content more robust. Leading academicians, communication professionals, senior editors and journalists from key media groups were present at the ceremony.

In 2016, UNICEF and partners are looking to scale up the initiative by associating with media universities and schools, for taking this course forward through classroom teaching and online medium.

Satluj River Discharge 18,954 Cusec, Yamuna 1,648 Cusec

Satluj River Discharge 18,954 Cusec, Yamuna 1,648 Cusec
April26, 2016 (C) Ravinder Singh ravinderinvent@gmail.com
Just one story is enough to establish that even though Satluj River
has just one Storage Dam but is good enough to ensure 18,964 cusecs of
water supply in PEAK SUMMER season. But on the other hand Yamuna River
Without Storage Dams has just 1648 Cusecs* of flows at Hathnikund
Barage barely that is barely enough for Municipal Supplies among
riparian states. [*Average daily discharge 1064 cusecs]
http://www.cea.nic.in/reports/daily/hydro/2016/April/20.pdf
TOI doesn’t tell is that Bhakra Dam has 1928 Million Cubic Meters of
Water in Store on April20,2016 – even if this is to be released over
100 days – it is 19 MCM everyday or about 8000 Cusecs plus Inflows
that may exceed 10,000 cusecs to even 30,000 cusecs – Satluj catchment
is still getting Snow Fall.
– THUS BHAKRA DAM can maintain over 18,000+ cusecs of supplies right
up to July18, 2016. [In this not considering diversion of 3800 cusecs
from Beas River]
Haryana Neglected Building of Renuka, Lakhwar & Vyasi Dams that could
have stored 1000 MCM of water for Summer Supplies and ensured over
4000 Cusecs of Additional Supplies in Summer Months and DOUBLED
CONSUMPTION of Yamuna River Water.
Haryana was entitled to 9 BCM of Yamuna Waters in 1950-1994 period,
reduced to 5.7 BCM after 1994.
Supreme Court should order Renuka, Lakhwar & Vyasi Dams to be built in
24 months.

Champions Trophy and Six nations tournament to determine final combination: Roelant Oltmans
~Oltmans and his men rejoin the National camp in Bengaluru after the break post Sultan Azlan Shah Tournament ~

Bengaluru, 26th April 2016: Fresh from a week-long break post the Sultan Azlan Shah  tournament in Malaysia where the Indian men’s hockey team finished second behind world champions Australia and returned with a Silver, captain Sardar Singh and his team were put through the rigors of a gruelling yo-yo test to access their fitness level here at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) South Centre on Tuesday morning.
Speaking about his men’s recent outing,  Chief Coach Roelant Oltmans said: “Satisfied is a big word and people who know me,  know well that I can’t feel satisfied so easily, but the performance of the team is always getting better. It is important to me as a coach that the level we touched remains consistent.”
Speaking of the final against Australia,  Oltmans feels that the team’s defence tactics were good. “Australia is the no. 1 side in the world but at the same time,  we put forth an improved show at Azlan Shah. Our defence was well structured” says the Dutchman.
“We had an experimental team at Azlan Shah. Shreejesh is the no. 1 goal keeper in India and we didn’t bring him to Malaysia to test the others. While I believe, Harjot and Akash could have done better, we are overall working to better goalkeeping with the seven other boys via special sessions” added Oltmans.
With exactly 101 days left before their first tie in the Rio Olympics,  Oltmans’ focus is to improve by another ten per cent in every aspect of the game. “If we manage to do that then we come close to being medal contender which is our core mission. We also play a few games such as Champions Trophy, Six Nations Tournament which will determine the best combination plays at the Olympics. We also play friendlies with Spain,  Belgium and New Zealand. This gives us opportunity to test like we did in Malaysia,” concludes the coach.
