CONCURRENT REPATRIATION OF 09 SRI LANKAN FISHERMEN


FROM KARAIKAL AND 96 INDIAN FISHERMEN FROM SRI LANKA

Karaikal 09 Apr 16.      Consequent to the mutual agreement between India and Srilanka, 96 Indian fishermen from Srilanka and 09 Srilankan fishermen from India were repatriated to their respective country wherein, the fishermen were handed over and taken over at IMBL between Indian Coast Guard ships and Sri Lankan Naval ships.
Indian Coast Guard Ships Rani Durgavati today repatriated 09 Sri Lankan fishermen who were arrested for poaching activities in Indian waters by Indian Coast Guard Ship Sagar on 24 Feb 16.  Repatriation of Sri Lankan fishermen was facilitated post their release by Hon’ble Court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (I/C), Egmore.
In addition, repatriation of 96 Indian fishermen was also effected at Karaikal today.  The repatriation was carried out by two Coast Guard Ships, namely Abheek and Rani Durgavati. The ships took over the fishermen from Sri Lankan Navy at 1330 hrs on         09 Apr 16.         Coast Guard Ship Abheek and Rani Durgavati combinedly took over 96 Indian fishermen and were brought to Karaikal.  The repatriated Indian fishermen belongs to Nagapattinam (08), Pudukkottai (19), Ramanathapuram (49) and Tuticorin (20) districts of Tamil Nadu.
Both the ships reached Karaikal at 1700 hrs on 09 Apr 16.  After due investigation/documentation, the fishermen were handed over to fisheries department as per information received from Commandant, Coast Guard Station Karaikal.  The fishermen were received at Karaikal Port by Commanding Officer, Coast Guard Station Karaikal, Joint Director of Fisheries, Nagapattinam and Assistant Director of Fisheries viz., Nagapattinam (South)/ Pudukkottai/ Ramanathapuram/ Tuticorin.
