US, Argentine Presidents Are Scheduled To Hold First Meeting

US, Argentine Presidents Are Scheduled To Hold First Meeting Late Morning In Casa Rosada

BUENOS AIRES, March 23-President Barack Obama kicks off on Wednesday the first visit of a US president to Argentina in twenty years, and although no great announcements are expected it will be a great boost to Mauricio Macri’s three-month administration, his bold economic reforms and effective efforts to reinsert Argentina in the world.According to the official agenda, Obama’s first activity will be a meeting at mid-morning with Argentine counterpart, Mauricio Macri, at the emblematic Casa Rosada (government house).
Following the private meeting ministers from the US delegation will hold talks with Argentine ministers and sign cooperation agreements.
At 13:30 the two presidents will hold a press conference at Casa Rosada, and later Obama will cross Plaza Mayo to Buenos Aires cathedral where he will pay tribute to General Jose de San Martin, Argentina’s national hero.
At 15:30 the president and Michelle will meet staff from the US embassy in Argentina at the Sheraton Hotel.
An hour later Obama is scheduled to meet with Argentine young entrepreneurs in La Usina del Arte cultural center, and will be declared Illustrious Citizen of Buenos Aires City. Later in the afternoon Obama and Macri are scheduled to close a US/Argentine business seminar.
At 19:00 the Obama couple will attend a dinner offered to their honor by Macri with 400 guests at the ex Kirchner Cultural Center, now called Bicentenary. Although it’s not an official State visit, Obama will meet the heads of Legislative chambers.
On Thursday, before traveling to Bariloche on March 24, Obama will visit the Park of Memory of Costanera Norte, in Buenos Aires City, in a gesture of support to democracy and human rights and a tribute to the victims of State terrorism.
The White House recently announced its intention to declassify new US files that include military and intelligence documents on the Argentine military regime (1976-1983). Obama’s visit takes place at a very sensitive date, the fortieth anniversary of the military 1976 coup, considered one of the bloodiest in recent Argentine history.
At midday the US delegation will fly to Bariloche, where the family will be shown around the city and enjoy Patagonian landscape. The Obama family requested specifically to visit the world renowned tourist resort. At midnight the delegation returns to Buenos Aires and later flies back to the Washington.

Design in its many manifestations forms an integral part of every culture. Civilizations evolve and attain their full potential because of it. Design based on creative industries in India are witness to a fascinating churning, necessitating a search for a vision that may inform their evolution beyond – spanning education, profession and industry. Thus, involving exposes, roundtables, exhibitions etc. Design by Design is a step in that direction.
The energy behind the design of a pin or a city being the same, this joint initiative of Alliance Française de Delhi and Studio IF is also geared towards raising levels of appreciation within and nurturing connections across various creative industries – architecture, urban/ landscape/ interior design, product/ industrial design, textile/ fashion design, graphic/ communication design etc.. Local and global in outlook, it is directed at the initiated and the uninitiated alike.
Design X Design Exposé: A linking bimonthly two hours long activity involves sharing of high quality professional work of designers from the city and outside (whenever possible ) in a neutral, friendly and open environment . Each Expose’ generally consists of presentations made by two designers, each drawn from habitat design (architecture/urban/landscape/interior design) and non–habitat design (product / communication / apparel design) respectively, culminating in an open discussion and Q & A.

PM known to be punctilious but alas

I have now experienced this for ten long years and so thought that I might as well put this in the public domain in the hope that some change comes about.
This about the well established practice of ministers and secretaries and also sundry officials to give multiple appointments at the same time and keep people waiting interminably. Sitting in the visitors room with others desirous of a ‘Darshan’ of the quasi deity one feels miserable and begins to question the very decision to have sought an appointment.
I know that Many of my academic friends following the principle of ‘अपनी इज़्ज़त अपने हाथ’ keep away from these offices. But does that really serve the social purpose?
This eminently avoidable practice has resulted in the emergence of a whole class of intermediaries (these days a bit less I am told) whose only job is to shorten the time one has to spend cooling ones heels in the dreaded visitors room. I have seen people who are called earlier (10.28 for a 9.45 am appointment ) smirk with pride at others who are condemned to cont he their vigil. Not surprising then that big corporates have large departments called Goverment relations whose sole job is to make sure that their bosses didn’t have to wait in the VR.
Having worked in the ADB, GOI, CII and FICCI and as an academic, I have happened to visit Goverment offices in several other capitals. The VR is not a necessary stop before meeting ministers or senior civil servants. It is used sparingly and mostly whe one reaches ahead of time as one is likely to for an important appointment. But in Delhi and also state capitals in India, an hour long wait in VR is par for the course.
The reason visitors don’t mind such a wait I was told by a GR expert is that the longer you are seen to have spent in the ministers ante-chambers the more connected you are assumed to be by lesser mortals!!
In a Goverment that is headed by a PM known to be punctilious about keeping appointments, this is supremely ironical. It must change. This practice in itself makes the difference between a sensitive and arrogant establishment.
Better not to give an appointment than to keep people hanging.
May be one should follow other peers and disconnect from the Goverment. Will that though not falling prey to ones ego? I wonder and invite comments.
Rajni Bajpai What do you think, govt officials spend their precious time feeling good about making people wait in visitors rooms? They themselves are at the beck and call of sundry ministers and bosses and have rather stressful and unpredictable calls on their own time. I dont think they get some bizarre pleasure in making people wait unnecessarily to boost their ego. I think people who have a problem with waiting have their own ego problems. They think they are too great and should be attended to pronto. Govt servants have often to cope with the derision and pig headedness of egoistic mediocre entities who imagine they are somehow special.
Alok Chakrabarti Rajiv Kumar I have suffered from this many times when I visited Delhi for various occasions. Also may I tell you that Gora visitors are ushered in more quickly than us the brown skinned ones. This is rooted in two factors, one we have little concern for human dignity and two we have little value for time.
More you keep one waiting more you feel important.
Your use of the word “darshan” is appropriate and it’s a reminder of our imperial and colonial heritage. Finally , have kept your visitors waiting when you occupied position of power? Cheers.

Idea of Europe is Dead

March 23, 2016 · by Prof R. Vaidyanathan
Brussels Airport attacks by Jihadists again bring to life challenge faced by Europe as we know. Europe of   Mozart and Goethe and Schopenhauer and Sartre and Beethoven is dead.
The cultured European having his wine and enjoying concerts and Opera is passé.
Today Every European walks with his eyes turned on his back and ears listening to any changes.
In small towns new neighbours are looked at with suspicion and old neighbours are expected to behave. The sound of screeching cars at night makes them awake and sirens and cops are normal scene.
The Radical Islam is not fighting Christianity –which anyhow is dead in Europe—but it is fighting the modernity. Islam is frightened of modernity destroying their religion and culture how so ever unacceptable it may be to European liberals. It is concerned about pre-marital sex/contraception/homosexuality/adultery/ “unprotected” women etc.
Europe does not know how to handle it. The rise of right-wing forces –le Pen in France and PEGIDA in Germany-is going to lit the fires of newer European conflicts. Europe thought– a la Merkel– that they can buy peace with radical Islam by “requesting” them to integrate. But integrate with what? Integrate with “immoral” Europe where women are exhibited as “open meat” [in the words of the Australian Imam] who are “poisonous”
Europe has seen Crusades and 100 years wars-between Christianity and Islam. But never has it had seen a conflict of this nature between “modernity” and Islam. The ongoing tussle in Turkey enlarges the conflict in the underbelly of Europe. Already Europe has 50% unemployment among youth groups and everyday 10000 are marching in the name of refugees. Remember some 200 years before entire Spain and up to the gates of Vienna it was Andalusia Empire and thousands of mosques were converted to Churches after Europe was “cleansed” of Islam.
This time the Europe which is facing crisis is different. It is not the Pews and Stained glasses but concert halls and swimming pools and whole night parties opposed by Radicals.
The issue is regarding life style and one likes it or not radical Islam is “Global moral policeman”. He knows the place of women in society and also the place of Europeans.
Unfortunately Europe has lost the will to fight and stand for whatever are its values. Its own idea of “freedom” is going to devour it when it is offered to Radical Islamists. Europe as we know is dead. Amen.
