130,000 migrants reached Europe by sea so far in 2016 – UN
Over 130,000 migrants and refugees have reached Europe via the Mediterranean so far this year, the UN’s refugee agency (UNHCR) said Tuesday. This is more than the total number in the first five months of 2015. Out of a total of 131,724 people who have arrived on Europe’s shores this year, 122,637 landed in Greece and most were fleeing the conflict in Syria, AFP reported, citing the statement. An estimated 24,000 migrants in Greece were in need of accommodation as of Monday night, according to the UN agency. It warned that “Europe is on the cusp of a largely self-induced humanitarian crisis.”The UNHCR also accused EU governments of fueling the chaos and suffering by resorting to “inconsistent practices” in response to the migrant influx.

Suicide bombers’ killed as Indian consulate targeted in Jalalabad, Afghanistan
Militants attacked the Indian consulate in the city of Jalalabad, Afghanistan, on Wednesday. The assault triggered a fierce gun battle that left two attackers dead, IANS reported. Fourteen others – none of them Indian – were reportedly injured in an area that also houses the Pakistani and Iranian missions. All Indian diplomats and consulate staff were safe, according to Afghan and Indian officials. At least two attackers opened fire after a loud boom was heard, Khaama Press said, adding that security forces killed “a team of suicide bombers.” The attack, which started around noon and ended a few hours later, comes ahead of peace talks this week between the Afghan government and the Taliban.
Explosions and gunfire rocked the area near the Indian consulate in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad on Wednesday, Reuters said, citing witnesses. The blast reportedly shattered windows and doors in nearby buildings and destroyed at least eight cars. The assault followed a suicide attack on the nearby Pakistani consulate in Jalalabad in January.

BERLIN, March 2, 2016 –A glittering collection of the world’s greatest sports stars have been nominated for the 2016 Laureus World Sports Awards, following a ballot by the world’s media.
The contest for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award promises to be the hottest ever. Nominees include three-time Laureus winner Usain Bolt, tennis No.1 Novak Djokovic, triple Formula One world champion Lewis Hamiltonand five-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi. They are joined by first time Nominees Stephen Curry, star of NBA’s Golden State Warriors, and golf’s world No.1 Jordan Spieth.
After a sparkling 2015 in which she won three Grand Slams, US tennis legendSerenaWilliamsis again nominated for the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Award – her record tenth Laureus Nomination.
In another strong category, the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team is nominated for the second straight year for theLaureus World Team of the Year Award, along with Rugby World Cup winners the All Blacks, Champions League winners FC Barcelona, NBA championsGolden State Warriors, the Great Britain Davis Cup Teamand the US Women’s Football Team, who won their thirdWorld Cup.
Two sportsmen are nominated in two categories: surfer Mick Fanning (Action andComeback) and golfer Jordan Spieth(Sportsman and Breakthrough).
In addition to Fanning, the Laureus World Comeback of the Year category features some of the biggest names in sport – Rugby Player of the Year Dan Carter, world heptathlon championJessica Ennis-Hill, the most decorated Olympian Michael Phelps,Kenya’s 800 metres world championDavid Rudishaand US ski legendLindsey Vonn.

The 17th Laureus World Sports Awards, which recognises sporting achievement during the calendar year 2015, is the premier honours event on the international sporting calendar. This is the first time the Laureus World Sports Awards have been staged in Germany. The winners, as voted by the Laureus World Sports Academy, the ultimate sports jury, made up of 55 of the greatest sportsmen and sportswomen of all time, will be unveiled at a globally televised Awards Ceremony staged in the Messe Berlin Palais am Funkturm on the evening of Monday, April 18.
While celebrating the greatest sporting successes of the year, the Awards Ceremony also showcases the work of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, which has supported more than 150 sports-based community projects around the world and helped to improve the lives of millions of young people.

Shweta swings to lead on day 1
Pune, 2 March 2016: Local girl Shweta Galande carded the only even par round of 72 on the first day to grab the lead in the sixth leg of the Hero Women’s Professional Golf Tour at the Oxford Golf Resort here on Wednesday. Trailing her in joint second position at 1 over 73 are Kiran Matharu and Amandeep Drall. The INR 6,00,000 event featuring 19 players will culminate on 4th March.
Shweta had a shaky start, carding two bogeys on the 1st and 5th holes. Thereafter, she regained her composure and carded three birdies on the 6th, 10th and 14th holes while dropping just one shot in the back nine on the 18th. She finished with a score of par 72 to take the first round lead. Shweta has been guilty of not capitalizing on her first round performance several times in the past. She would be keen to add a third professional title.
Overseas player Kiran Matharu and Panchkula’s Amandeep Drall are tied for the second position with identical scores of 1 over 73. Kiran had an indifferent start, dropping three shots on the 1st, 3rd and 5th holes with just a lone birdie on the 4th in her front nine. She played with much more control in the latter half and carded two birdies on the 10th and 15th holes while dropping a shot on the very last hole. Amandeep, who is making a return to the Tour after a gap of one month, carded three birdies on the 2nd, 8th and 17th holes. Her campaign on the day also included four dropped shots on the 3rd, 4th, 13th and 16th holes.
Kolkata’s Smriti Mehra and the Delhi duo of Gauri Monga and Mehak Sharma are all tied for the fourth position with identical scores of 2 over 74. Smriti’s eventful round included three birdies on the 4th, 10th and 11th holes with an equal number of bogeys on the 1st, 12th and 15th. She also carded a double bogey on the 7th hole to finish two shots adrift of the leader. Mehak Sharma started impressively, carding three birdies on the 1st, 6thand 7th holes. However, the rookie from New Delhi could not sustain the momentum and carded five consecutive bogeys on the 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th holes. Gauri’s card on the day included two birdies on the 2nd and 9th holes along with four bogeys on the 5th, 6th, 7th and 16th.
Hero Motocorp sponsored Sharmila Nicollet is placed seventh with a score of 3 over 75, followed by Delhi’s Ankita Tiwana and Bengaluru’s Trisha Sunil in tied eighth position at 4 over 76.
