To reduce anti-Russian sanctions
French Senate committee approves draft resolution calling to reduce anti-Russian sanctions
The French Senate will consider on June 8 a draft resolution calling for the reduction of sanctions imposed against Russia, RIA Novosti reported, citing one of the authors of the document, Yves Pozzo di Borgo. The senator said the draft resolution had been approved “almost unanimously” by the Senate’s Committee for European Affairs. The authors, who believe that the policy of sanctions is no longer viable, say the resolution can be amended, as it “was meant to be more of a political gesture than an actual resolution,”Sputnik quoted di Borgo as saying. President Francois Hollande will have to take this resolution into account, “even though it is a non-binding vote,” according to di Borgo.

EU extends Syria sanctions until June 2017
The EU has extended sanctions against Syria by one year, according to the European Council’s official statement. The measures will be in place until June 1, 2017 and the decision stems from conclusions made in December 2014 that the bloc would continue on its course “as long as repression continues.” The EU says it aims to further support efforts at a diplomatic solution and the intra-Syrian talks coordinated by the UN. But as long as the government of Bashar Assad is in charge, it has been made clear there will be no loosening of the belt.

Turkey slams Cameron’s EU accession comment as ‘shameful’
Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus decried British Prime Minister David Cameron’s comments last week on EU accession, in which he said Turkey would be able to join the EU only by the year 3000, calling it“shameful,” Turkish media report. “We do everything necessary, fulfill all obligations [in order to join the EU]. If someone says that Turkey will join the EU only in 3000, then it is not our shame but a shame for those who say it,”Kurtulmus said, questioning the EU’s own future in 30 years. “You should first try and successfully resolve the problems within the EU in 30 years,” he added.
