Japanese carmakers make record output

Six Japan of  eight major automakers report a record number of vehicles were produced overseas last year. The strong yen had made exports unprofitable.
Overseas production rose 18 percent in 2012 to more than 15 million units. The overseas factories turned out 62 percent of the firms’ total output.
The makers producing the most outside Japan are Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Suzuki, Daihatsu and Fuji Heavy Industries that owns Subaru.
More of the vehicles are being made in Southeast Asia and North America where demand is growing. The automakers have still not shifted production back home despite the recent weaker yen. In fact, they plan to boost output in emerging economies this year.
They want to minimize the impact currency swings have on profits. But critics say this puts Japanese jobs and domestic production at risk.Media agencies
