Myanmar regains access to EU with lower tariffs
The European Union appears set to reinstate Myanmar to a preferential tariff scheme. The move will eliminate tariffs on almost all Myanmar imports to the EU bloc.

Myanmar was suspended from the EU's Generalized System of Preferences in 1997. The country's military regime was accused of systematic violations of international conventions on forced labor.

Myanmar is classified by the EU as a least developed country and will be granted duty- and quota-free access to the European market for all products, except arms.

Most of Myanmar's exports to Europe are clothing. The EU aims to help promote democratization in the country by supporting its economic growth.
