Filing of nomination paper ends in Nagaland and Meghalaya



A total of 193 and 357 candidates filed their nominations on Wednesday for the Nagaland and Meghalaya Assembly elections respectively which are scheduled on 23rd February.

Officials in the Nagaland Chief Electoral Office said, 193 candidates belonging to eight parties, including the ruling Naga Peoples Front, Congress, and independents filed nomination papers in 12 electoral districts of the state.
In the Dimapur district, which has five assembly segments, 17 candidates filed nomination papers.
Seven candidates filed nominations for the two seats in Peren district. A total of 26 candidates submitted their nominations for Kohima district, which has 7 seats.
The scrutiny of the nomination papers will be taken up on Thursday, 7th February and last date of withdrawal is on 9thFebruary.
In 2008 election, Nagaland Peoples Front won 26 seats; Indian National Congress won 23 seats. And BJP and Independent parties won 2 and 7 seats respectively.
In Meghalaya, as many as 357 candidates from the 60 constituencies in the state filed their papers. The scrutiny will be held on Thursday, 7th February.
The 24 constituencies from the five districts of Garo hills have witnessed the highest number of candidates who have filed their nomination for the upcoming polls in the state.
In the 2008 Meghalaya General election result was a ‘hung verdict’. Congress won 25 seats out of 60 while NCP and United Democratic Party won
In the meantime, seven candidates were in the fray for by-election to the Chalfilh Assembly seat in Mizoram's Aizawl district.
The nomination papers would be scrutinised on Thursday, 7thFebruary and the last date of withdrawal of nomination would be on coming Saturday.
The by-poll was neccessitated following the demise of Chawngtinthanga of the Congress, the legislator elected from the seat in the 2008 assembly polls, on September 16 last year.
Assembly Polls in Tripura will be held on 14th February while Meghalaya and Nagaland will go to polls on 23rd February. The results along with the by-elections will be out on 28th of the same month.
