Ministries Ordered to Open Books for Next Govt

Ministries have been directed to prepare for the transfer of power to a new government at the end of March, officials have told The Irrawaddy. Department heads in each of the country’s 31 ministries have received instructions on how to prepare for the political transition in the remaining months of President Thein Sein’s administration.

Mandalay power plant deal signed

An agreement to build a $300 million independent gas-fired power plant in Mandalay Division has been signed by Sembcorp Industries and Myanmar government officials. The plant is expected to be completed in 2018, and the project will supply power under a 22-year power purchase agreement (PPA). Only about one-third of the country’s population has electricity, and even they have to deal with frequent outages. The government is building power lines, and more power plants to connect more people to the power grid.

Forgive Those Who Wronged Us, Suu Kyi Tells NLD

Aung San Suu Kyi has urged elected candidates from the National League for Democracy (NLD) to join hands with those once responsible for persecuting members of the party, telling them that forgiveness is a necessary step toward national reconciliation. Speaking in Naypyidaw on Saturday, the NLD leader told party representatives from upper Burma to consider the possibility of working alongside their erstwhile political foes.
