Kurds clash with police in Istanbul
Turkish police deployed water cannon and tear gas to disperse a demonstration led by Kurds who were angry that central authorities were not able to prevent a terrorist act committed in a border town by a suspected Islamic State suicide bomber.The military wing of the Kurdish independence movement, the Kurdistan Workers’ party (PKK) accused the government of “supporting and cultivating” Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), following the attack which killed at least 31 people and injured scores of others in the town of Suruc, on the southern border with Syria. The Kurdish parliamentary wing, the People’s Democracy Party (HDP) which increased its vote share in the parliamentary election earlier this summer, agreed, despite the Turkish government publicly condemning the suicide attack.

Nearly 20 million people were forced to flee their homes due to floods, storms and earthquakes last year, the Norwegian Refugee Council said on Monday. Asia accounted for almost 90 percent of the 19.3 million displaced in 2014, led by typhoons in China and the Philippines, and floods in India. Since 2008, an average of 26.5 million people have been displaced every year by disasters, according to the report. Manila to station jets, frigates on former US base near China-claimed waters
The Philippines will station fighter jets and frigates on a former US naval base facing the South China Sea amid a maritime row with China, AFP reported. They will be located in Subic Bay, some 200km from a shoal off the northern Philippines controlled by Chinese forces, Arsenio Andolong, the defense department’s public affairs chief, said Monday. Last week, Manila said it would reopen Subic Bay, one of the US’s largest overseas bases until it was shut down more than two decades ago. Egypt on Monday received three Rafale fighter jets from France, the first of 24 warplanes sold in a €5.2 billion deal earlier this year, AFP said. The planes will be flown from an air base in southern France to Cairo by specially trained pilots on Tuesday. The deal also includes contracts for missiles and for a FREMM multi-mission frigate from naval group DCNS.
