Enhancing India’s Competitiveness

Note from the President and CEO

Dear Colleagues,
We at India Council on Competitiveness are committed to see India grow and enhance its prosperity. In our efforts to deepen the narrative on competitiveness, we have conducted deliberations, discussions and debates. Through these, we have put the focus on key issues, challenges and opportunities faced by India. Some of the engagements that we did last month are as follows
  1. Sustainability SummitSustainability Summit: Creating Social Impact through Corporate Efforts was organized on May 7, 2015 at The Leela, Gurgaon. The Council conducted the session in association with Institute for Competitiveness, Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), Fair Climate Network (FCN), Roland Berger, India Council on Competitiveness and SoulAce. Ashok Kumar Pavadia (Adviser & Additional Secretary, Inter State Council Secretariat, Ministry of Home Affairs) delivered a keynote at the session. It was followed by a very intriguing talk by Dr. Nipun Vinayak (Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Drinking Water & Sanitation, Government of India) who is passionately working on the issue of open defecation. The summit was designed as a platform to deliberate on the CSR and Sustainability issues crucial to organizations from the perspective of implementation challenges, solutions and opportunities. Some of the discussion leaders who shared their views on sustainability were Pranshu Singhal (Head of Sustainability, Microsoft India), Deepak Arora (CEO, Essar Foundation), Deepa Menon (Sr. VP – CSR & Corp Communication, PVR Ltd.), Suresh Reddy (Director, SRF Foundation), Subhrangshu Neogi (Director – Marketing & Brand, Religare Enterprise Ltd.), Neerja Singh (Group Executive VP, Responsible Banking, YES Bank) and Ganesh Tripathy (Chief Sustainability Officer, Jubilant Life Sciences). They discussed  how corporates can be a catalyst in working on environmental issues, in partnerships for successful CSR implementation, and in having a management approach to CSR.
  2. Interaction with The United States International Trade CommissionThe United States International Trade Commission (USITC) delegation led by Ms. Laura Bloodgood and Mr. David Coffin met the members of the Council on May 13 in Gurgaon. The delegation discussed about how India’s trade and investment climate has changed under Prime Minister Modi’s administration. The meeting had dialogues around how India’s trade and investment policies are affecting bilateral trade and investment.
  3. Shared Value Initiative IndiaShared Value Initiative India (SVII) was announced as a regional partner of the global Shared Value Initiative (www.sharedvalue.org) at the Shared Value Summit held in New York on May 12. The Shared Value Initiative is a global community of leaders who find business opportunities in societal challenges. The Initiative was announced as a Commitment to Action for the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting in 2012. In attendance and there to confer the partnership were industry stalwarts includingMichael E. Porter, Bishop William Lawrence University Professor at Harvard Business School; Wilfried Aulbur Managing Partner & CEO, India, Chairman Middle East, Head Automotive Asia at Roland Berger Strategy Consultants; and Mark Kramer, co-founder and Managing Director of FSG, a nonprofit consulting firm established in 2000 and specializing in strategy, evaluation, and research, among others. SVII wants to tackle the underserved needs of society by engaging partners who have the capacity to create new inclusive business opportunities around social and economic challenges. The initiative would provide a platform for knowledge, experience, research, and thoughts of global leaders and organizations that have embraced shared value thinking and practice within their organizations, to be shared. (http://sharedvalue.org/groups/new-regional-partner-shared-value-initiative-india)
The above activities have added value to existing dialogues on the state of our society and also clearly defined outcomes.
We welcome you to become an active participant of the ongoing debates by getting associated with the India Council on Competitiveness. To explore the memberships details, either write to me or visit the following link: http://compete.org.in/membership/

Achhe Din Ka Kacha Chittha
Dear Friends,
As the  NDA government  completes its one year in office, we come together as representatives of different people’s organisations and civil society to evaluate its promise of “Achhe Din” -What has this meant for people at large, for rights of those living in the margins, for constitutional principles and cultural diversity and the very idea of India. We invite you to join us from 16th May to 2nd June in a series of events.
The government has declared ambitious schemes like Beti Bachao and Beti Padhao, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Smart cities, Make in India etc and has also given slogans likeSaab Ka Saath Saab ka Vikash. It is essential for us to know how far the government has lived up to its promises.
The development approach of the current government is seemingly heavily tilted towards attracting more foreign direct investment to India. In pursuance of creating an ‘enabling environment to do business’, the government is attempting to amend the land acquisition law, which may lead to undemocratic transfer of land  in the hands of land sharks since the consent clause is being diluted.
The nation has witnessed several instances of communal violence under the current regime which has bred insecurity among the religious minorities. Similar concern is clearly visible by the recent attacks by the government on the civil society by way of de-registering them, stopping the fund flow under FCRA, alleging them to be involved in anti-national activities and so on. The unabated suicides of farmers raise questions on the model of governance being followed by the current regime.
We in we invite you to join us in the series of programs, attached with this invite,
Yours sincerely,

Best Electricity Bill 2014 Yet NOT GREATEST
May15, 2015 (C) Ravinder Singh progressindia008@yahoo.com
Only great thing to have happened in NDA-II is the Electricity Bill
2014 presented by Piyush Goyal. But this is not the Greatest in The
World –
Great thing missing are: –
1.]  STANDBY POWER NOT INTEGRATED WITH GRID: – Piyush Goyal led bill
didn’t Integrate 80,000 MW of Standby Power with our Power Supply
system. Delhi alone has over 5000 MW of standby power. This implies
Delhi can be alive even in case of Total Grid Failure in minutes. In
worst breakdown situation Delhi was in total blackout for two days.
[North Zone has over 18,000 MW of Hydro Power also.]  As given in the
following picture Companies have installed Rooftop Automatic Operated
Gen-sets which can attain full power in seconds.
    Electricity Bill 2014 needs to include STANDBY POWER in Power Supply
Network. [Let Me Explain BRPL has few Portable Generator or
Transformer but it takes say 5-10 hours to Connect and Supply Power
but Standby Generators of say 2000 MW can be switched on few seconds
or can be Switched on Than ‘Load Shedding’]
2.]  INDEPENDENT METERING AGENCY: –  Center & States need INDEPENDENT
Meter Testing & Calibration Agency.
    No One in India TRUST Private Companies who install SOFTWARES to RUN
Meters Fast. Private Companies FIDDLE with ISI Marked meter before
installing including Software – My Meter at TAIL END records 250V as
in picture.
3.]  POOR QUALITY OF SERVICE: – As given in second picture at the end
of this pdf – BRPL led DISCOM has completely neglected QUALITY OF
SERVICE. There was a local fault in one home and BRPL disconnected
power supply for over 250 Consumers for entire day – Contractor had
not even BASIC TOOLS & SAFETY EQUIPMENT. INDIA PRODUCE MILLION
ENGINEERS EVERY YEAR – NOT ENGAGED IN PUBLIC SERVICE.
    SMEs led by Qualified Engineers should be Operating upto 10 MW 11 KV
Distribution Feeders who are accessible to Consumers easily.
    DISTRIBUTION FEEDERS AND T&D INFRA SHOULD BE OWNED BY STATES.
4.]  ENERGY EFFICIENCY: – SME Distributors who are Engineers should be
PROMOTED to Undertake ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROGRAMS – SMEs Distributors
to get 50% of Savings as Incentives for 4 years.
    SME Distributors for Example Buy LED Lamps or Efficient Gadgets in
Bulk & supply them to Consumers, get ADDITIONAL REWARDS FOR ENERGY
SAVINGS.
    Why Can’t PROFESSIONAL EXPERTS UNDERTAKE T&D ENERGY EFFICIENCY
PROGRAMS? I have offered to save 20% Power Lost in T&D or 200 BU
Presently worth Rs.100,000 Crore Retail Value and paid for 2-4 years
of Energy Saving for Lifelong Savings for India.
5.]  RENEWABLE ENERGY – 200,000 MW SolarPV Rooftops: – Electricity
Bill Didn’t ALLOW FREEDOM to INSTALL ROOFTOP SOLARS to CONSUMERS. When
Consumers can install STANDBY POWER for Rare Use – Why Are They are
Not Permitted to Install SOLAR POWER which is Clean, Daytime Peaking
Generation & Green Energy?
    Developing 200,000 MW of Hydro Power Potential with 500 BCM Storage
& Flood Control Benefits is not in the Bill But CRITICAL for INDIA
PROGRESS.
