Billionaire wins Ukraine presidential vote

Poll: Billionaire wins Ukraine presidential vote
Exit polls suggested candy tycoon Petro Poroshenko won Ukraine’s presidential election in the first round on Sunday, a ballot that took place amid weeks of fighting in eastern regions where pro-Russia separatists have seized govt buildings and battled govt troops.
The rebels had vowed to block the ballot in the east and less than 20 percent of the polling stations were open there.
But nationwide, about 60 percent of the electorate turned out, the central elections commission said.
Poroshenko, viewing the exit polls as definitive evidence of victory, said his first steps as president would be to visit the eastern industrial region of Donbass – home to Ukraine’s coal mines – and “put an end to war, chaos, crime and bring peace to the Ukrainian land.”
Long lines of voters snaked around polling stations in Kiev, the pro-Western capital, but heavily armed pro-Russia rebels in eastern Ukraine intimidated locals by smashing ballot boxes, shutting down polling centers and issuing threats.
The exit poll for Sunday’s election, conducted by three respected Ukrainian survey agencies, found the 48-year-old candy tycoon Poroshenko getting 55.9 percent of the vote.
Poroshenko ducked the question whether he was prepared to work with Russian President Vladimir Putin but said Kiev would like to negotiate a new security treaty with Moscow.
At a distant second was former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko with 12.9 percent, the poll showed.
Full results are expected Monday in the election that authorities in Kiev hope will be a critical step toward resolving Ukraine’s protracted crisis.
“I would like to congratulate Ukraine with the fact that despite the current aggression by the Kremlin and the desire to break this voting, the election happened and was democratic and fair,” Tymoshenko said after the polls closed.
“I think this is the evidence of the strength of our nation.”
The exit poll, which surveyed 17,000 voters at 400 precincts, claimed a margin of error of 2 percentage points, indicating Poroshenko passed the 50-percent mark needed to win without a runoff.
It was conducted by the Razumkov Center, Kiev International Sociology Institute and the Democratic Initiatives Foundation.

Putin thanked India for standing by Russia against sanctions by the West over Ukraine.

SAARC Leaders reach New Delhi

Nawaz Sharif arrives in India with a ‘message of peace’
Pak PM Nawaz Sharif arrives in India with a
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday arrived in India to attend the oath taking ceremony of Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi, becoming the first ever Pakistani leader to do so. The Pak PM said that Pakistan wants good relations with India and that he came to New Delhi with a “message of peace”.
63-year-old Modi, who led BJP to an astounding victory in the Lok Sabha polls, last week extended invitation to SAARC leaders including the Pakistan premier. Sharif, accompanied by a small delegation, left Pakistan at 9.30 a.m. (local time) and landed in New Delhi after a brief flight at around 11.00 a.m. (local time).
Sources said it is expected that the Pakistan leader will also give formal invitation to his counterpart for a visit. The News last night reported that Sharif met his younger brother Shahbaz Sharif along with others in Lahore and discussed the visit.
“The premier said Pakistan wanted the resolution of all issues with India, including Kashmir, Sir Creek, water and trade, and it wanted to establish a relationship on the basis of equality for peace in the region,” the paper said, citing unnamed sources.
In the meeting, Sharif said the government’s decision to release arrested Indian fishermen as a goodwill gesture and giving back the confiscated fishing boats for the first time in the history of the two sides was aimed at improving the ties.
No breakthrough is expected during the visit but it will provide the two leaders an opportunity to cultivate personal relations which go a long a way in reducing tensions.
Pakistan has avoided repeated reference to Kashmir before the visit which was in contrast to former military ruler Pervez Musharraf’s Agra trip of 2001 when he announced that the disputed region will be the central focus of the summit.
In another major development, Pakistan has so far not dropped any hint that Sharif will meet the Kashmiri leaders which is also a departure from the established tradition.
Musharraf’s high tea party by Pakistan High Commission in 2001 where the APHC leaders were invited had created a storm and almost rocked the entire trip.
President of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa, Mauritius  Prime Minister of Mauritius Navinchandra Ramgoolam have arrived in Delhi to attend Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony. Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has left for India to attend Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony.
The swearing-in ceremony of Narendra Modi as the 15th Prime Minister of India is to be the  mega event among events that have been staged at Rashtrapati Bhavan with the Asian  leaders guest list includes key leaders from SAARC countries, set to cross the 4,000 mark.

This is the first time that such a large gathering will be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where the biggest ceremonies so far have seen a maximum of up to 1,500 to 2,000 guests, for instance, during the ‘At Home’ functions on the occasions of Republic and Independence days.

The swearing-in functions of Chandrashekhar in 1990 and Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1998 were held at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan and saw an attendance of 1,200 to 1,300 guests, said Omita Paul, Secretary to President Pranab Mukherjee.

Bharatiya Janata Party general secretary Jagat Prakash Nadda is all set to take over as the party chief with Rajnath Singh making his way into the Narendra Modi Cabinet.
A lesser known face, Nadda was from the beginning a favourite for the party chief’s post.
Nadda was anointed as the national president of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha in 1991 at the age of 31.
Senior BJP leader and eight-time MP from Indore Sumitra Mahajan could be named the Lok Sabha Speaker. Mahajan is the longest serving woman parliamentarian.
Apart from Mahajan, the other name doing the rounds for the post is Karia Munda, who was deputy speaker in the 15th Lok Sabha. This is going to be a setback for senior party leader L K Advani, who has reportedly expressed his keenness for the Speaker’s post in which he doesn’t have to directly report to PM.
Sources said Advani’s name is not being considered for the post.

The  Narendra Modi’s cabinet run as follows:
* Arun Jaitley – Finance
* Rajnath Singh – Home
* Sushma Swaraj – External Affairs
* Ravi Shankar Prasad – Information and Broadcasting

‘Ecology and Society’

Concept Note:

For long it was assumed that there existed a hard ‘dividing line’ between nature and culture and consequently between the scientific and humanistic disciplines. Scholarship, in recent years, however, has increasingly argued the opposite: that social worlds and ecological worlds actually overlap, intersect and co-constitute each other. Such claims, in particular, have provided fertile grounds for interdisciplinary exchanges between naturalists, ecologists and historians and social scientists. But has the ‘social construction of the environment’ or the ideas of inventing nature gone too far. Has nature disappeared, in such a view and merely become a cultural artifact? Conversely are biologically informed ideas of changing ecosystems able to take adequate account of differing, contested human views of and interests in nature?
This workshop will bring together historians and biologists, conservationists and ecologists, scholars of rivers and forests, animals and coastlines. The reviews of ongoing work will help open up new questions and stimulate a fresh look at old ones.

Statement on condition of Tamils and Indian fishermen in Sri Lanka

26052014

From: Media Cell AAP <mediacellaap@gmail.com> Sun, 25 May ’14 6:09p

At the time when a new Prime Minister is taking office in India and has invited neighbouring leaders for his swearing in ceremony,  the  Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) would like to remind the Sri Lankan President Mr Mahinda Rajapakse and our new Prime Minister about the condition of Tamils in Sri Lanka as well as the repeated killings of Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan forces.
We demand the following:
1. We call for an independent, credible investigation into war crimes and human rights abuse in Sri Lanka. The Aam Aadmi Party wishes to draw attention to the burning issue of justice being denied for Sri Lankan Tamils, and the threats and intimidation faced by those who are trying to speak up against the Sri Lanka government.
It is nearly five years since the bloody armed conflict ended between the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE. A UN panel has found credible estimates of 40,000 people having lost their lives in this war, while other estimates place the loss of lives at 100,000. The Bishops of Mannar (situated in the War Zone) testified before the Sri Lankan Government-appointed LRRC that the estimated number of persons who lost their lives to be more than 149,000 at the end of the war. The Sri Lankan war has been the biggest humanitarian disaster in recent times but, by and large, world countries, including India, have chosen to turn away for narrow political or economic gain.
According to the Aam Aadmi Party’s understanding, thousands of lives still remain unaccounted for and unanswered.
A report by the International Crimes Evidence Project (ICEP) and Public Interest Advocacy Centre (PIAC) in Australia, finds overwhelming confirmation that the Government of Sri Lanka has destroyed evidence of mass graves burial sites in the post conflict period.
A report by the International Crimes Evidence Project (ICEP) and Public Interest Advocacy Centre (PIAC) in Australia, finds overwhelming confirmation that the Government of Sri Lanka has destroyed evidence of mass graves burial sites in the post conflict period.
Human Rights WATCH (HRW) report provides detailed accounts of 75 cases of alleged rape and sexual abuse that occurred from 2006-2012 in both official and secret detention centres throughout Sri Lanka. Men and women have reportedly been raped on multiple days, often by several people, with the army, police, and pro-government paramilitary groups frequently participating.
2. The Sri Lankan President should take immediate steps to end the climate of fear and uncertainty in which Tamils live in Sri Lanka. People there continue to live in constant fear of retribution. Enforced disappearances, which are notoriously known as the “White van disappearances”, detention under draconian laws, and threats to people who criticize the Sri Lankan government, seem to be prevalent and frequent. Minority Group International’s report on condition of women in Sri Lanka show how women belonging to minority communities in the north and east of Sri Lanka remain deeply insecure.
Human rights abuses and violations, ranging from sexual violence to land grabbing, continue.
3. The Rajapaksa government should take immediate steps to give the Tamil language the status promised in the island constitution. Attempts to impose Sinhalese in the North and the East are strongly condemned.
4. The AAP strongly demands that land taken over by the Sri Lankan military be returned to Tamil civilians. It also strongly condemns attempts at handing over land to Sinhalese settlers and attempts to neo colonise the North and the East.
5. The AAP would like to point out the North and the East are run like a giant military camp and the elected governments do not have the authority which the Constitution demands that they have. The Aam Aadmi Party asks for a scaling down of the army presence and a restoration of full authority to the civilian government.
6. The Aam Aadmi Party strongly condemns the killings of more than five hundred Tamil fishermen by the Sri Lankan navy. These killings are shocking and so is the reaction of the Indian government which has so far done little to stop these killings. While the need for talks to find a lasting solution to the problem of dwindling, shared, marine resources is obvious, there is a need for a more forceful response from India if these killings continue.  (ENDS)
