” The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) panel headed by PJ Nayak (Axis Bank fame) has finally lifted the lid on the Indian banking sector. The panel says that while the public sector banks suffer from undue interference from Government leading to poor decisions. The practice in many large Private Banks of ‘ever-greening’ bad loans but still continuing with hefty bonuses also exposes the banking sector to grave dangers. Both choke flow funds for investment. Panel’s recommendations that the government should divest its stake in state-owned banks to less than 50%, allow private equity houses to own 40% in distressed banks, and strip managers of private sector banks of their bonuses if caught ever-greening sticky loans, are path breaking. Indian MSMEs have a great stake: a competitive banking sector is much more in the interests of MSMEs than the policy of directed lending. ”

FISME hosts SAARC-TPN’s SME Working Group in New Delhi

The SAARC Trade Promotion Network- an international initiative to deepen intra-SAARC trade and cooperation and supported by GIZ, Nepal, held the meeting of SME Working group meeting at FISME Secretariat. The working group members from Afghanistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka participated in the deliberations along with members from Pakistan and Bangladesh who joined in through Skype. Besides reviewing ongoing initiatives, the working group gave in principle approval to FISME for implementing a value chain development project for two sectors: Juices and Textiles & Garments as lead organization with member organizations in other SAARC countries.

Reserve Bank- FISME Town Hall meeting with MSMEs in Badli, New Delhi

Reserve Bank (Delhi Region), with the support of Federation of India Micro and Small & Medium Enterprises (FISME), held its first town hall meeting on 2nd May 2014, with the Badli Industries Association which was chaired by the General Manager, Rural Planning and Credit Department (RPCD), RBI, Sonali Sengupta. The main objective of the meeting was to discuss the grievances and feedback that the small entrepreneurs face with the public as well as private sector banks. Most of the MSMEs face problems of finance in general and institutional funding in particular while entrepreneurs spend 70 to 80 per cent of their time in dealing with finance related matters, representatives of small industries in west Delhi area of Badli told RBI at the townhall meeting, an initiative of the central bank along with the industry body FISME.

FISME delegation to Taiwan

A 12 member Federation of Indian Micro and Small & Medium Enterprises (FISME) delegation participated in Taipei Manufacturing Technology Show (MTDUO 2014) held from 8th to 11th of May 2014 in Taipei, Taiwan, R.O.C. The delegation was coordinated by Taiwan External Trade Dev. Council and VTPC ( Government of Karnataka) provided support to Karnataka MSMEs. FISME delegation was led by Mr. Mohan Suresh, Past President of FISME. The delegates had an exposure to some of the latest machines being produced in Taiwan which were not normally to be seen in other exhibitions. The live demonstration in progress at the venue gave a very clear picture of the machine could deliver.

India, emerging markets need to increase infrastructure investments

The global economy has shown signs of strengthening over the past few months and the emerging markets like India need to increase investments, especially in infrastructure, to revive growth, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said today. Speaking at the first business session of the 47th Annual Meeting of ADB Board of Governors in Astana (Kazakhstan), Chidambaram also stressed upon the need to increase resources of the Asian Development Bank for lending, an official statement said. “Policies to revive growth in most emerging markets, including India, will have to be rooted in increasing investments, particularly in infrastructure. As most emerging markets are resource constrained, it would be necessary to have recourse to foreign savings for investment,” he said.

China policy hits cotton yarn exports from India

China’s new import policy has hit India’s cotton yarn exports significantly to the neighbouring country dealing a blow to the domestic industry. Considering that the change in Chinese policy has come at a time when cotton consumption within the country is rising and when exports of finished yarn is on the rise, industry officials think the move would result in larger than the anticipated six per cent drop in export of raw cotton, media reports said. Cotton importing countries around the world have been watching closely as the neighbouring giant has brought to an end a stockpiling scheme under which it has amassed more than 10 million tonnes of the fibre which is around 60 per cent of global cotton inventories.

Sugar output drops 3.45 per cent to 23.75 million tons: Indian Sugar Mills Association

The country’s sugar production fell 3.45 per cent to 23.75 million tonnes in the first seven months of the 2013-14 season as output declined in key states, industry body ISMA said today. The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) also said cane arrears are set to pile up to over Rs 12,000 crore this season due to falling prices and the government’s delay in fixing the subsidy for export of raw sugar. Mills produced 23.75 million tonnes of sugar till April of the October-September season compared with 24.6 million tonnes in the corresponding period last year, ISMA said. The current sugar crushing season has almost come to an end and only about 80 of the country’s 504 mills operated on April 30, it said in a statement.

India may join group with good drug manufacturing norms

To help pharmaceutical exporters meet numerous manufacturing and inspection requirements being put in place by buyer countries, India is considering joining a group of 41 countries that have good manufacturing practice (GMP) standards for drugs. Eyes PICS The Pharmaceutical Inspection Cooperation Scheme (PICS) — which includes Canada, Australia, European, African countries and the US — is an informal co-operative arrangement between regulatory authorities in the field of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) of medicinal products. “The Health Ministry and the Commerce Ministry are examining the option of joining PICS. We feel that the problems exporters face in terms of meeting different GMP and inspection procedures in different countries will be sorted out if we join PICS,” said PV Appaji, Director-General, Pharmexcil.

Smeda appears to be in a state of somnolence

Small and Medium Enterprise Development Authority (SMEDA) mandated to promote SMEs sector which constitutes 90 percent of total enterprises, contributing 38 percent to GDP, 25 percent to exports and engaging 80 percent non-agricultural force, appears in a state of somnolence. This is probably one of the reasons that the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Pakistan (ICMAP) has come out strongly in favour of SMEs, suggesting that government should extend support to boost SMEs capabilities, in its proposed strategy for “Economic and Industrial growth of Pakistan” submitted to the government.

Corrugated box industry calls for price hike; inflation, input costs to blame

Overwhelmed with increasing raw material cost and high inflation, India’s corrugated box industry, which has around 10-12 thousand micro and small units, is seeking price hike from their customers as many units especially in the northern and eastern part of the country which owing to highest raw material cost has shrunk the margin for the industry to almost nil. “The corrugated box industry is a margin based industry where the profit margins are very thin and the industry is highly competitive. Increase in the raw material cost is killing the industry, especially in the northern part of India such as Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Punjab, New Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan etc, as the price increase is maximum in the range of Rs 4 – 4.50,” President of Federation of Corrugated Box manufacturers of India, Ramchand Arora told KNN.

Taxmen take it too far; want to tax foreign nationals for income earned in their own countries

Taking it too far, the Indian taxmen want to subject foreign nationals, earning their commission from Indian exporters in their overseas markets, to the TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) and then claim its refund from the Indian tax authorities, the EEPC India said here today urging the Commerce and Finance Ministry to remove uncertainty in this regard in the next foreign trade policy. “Even though there is a High Court Judgement (that the TDS cannot be levied on the commission earned by foreign agents on exports), the situation is not clear because of certain circulars by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), causing a lot of inconvenience to the exporters who are finding it difficult to engage agents abroad in this backdrop,” EEPC India Chairman, Anupam Shah said in a statement here today.

Exporters may get 50% freight subsidy

Exporters are likely to enjoy a subsidy of up to 50 per cent on total freight charges paid on shipment of merchandise through ports outside Odisha. The draft export policy says the state government will reimburse up to 50 per cent of the cost of transportation paid by exporters at ports outside the state provided ports within the state do not have facilities for handling such cargo. Exporters would also get incentives for publicity and exposure of up to 50 per cent of the total cost subject to a ceiling of Rs 50,000. But such incentives will be allowed only in case of select reputed trade fairs. Besides, firms availing travel support from government of India under similar scheme will not be eligible for state incentive.

Exporters want new foreign trade policy to focus on competitive manufacturing

There is a need to propel manufacturing and focus on enhanced marketing, services exports, e-commerce, hi-tech products and merchanting trade, according to the exporters body, FIEO, which added that the new foreign trade policy should initiate measures for competitive manufacturing, both for augmenting exports and substituting imports. According the trade data released yesterday, India’s exports grew 5.26 per cent in dollars terms in April 2014 from a year ago period, reversing two months of decline. Imports declined 15 per cent in dollar terms, clearly indicating that industrial recovery remained elusive.

Lalitanjali Group to set up Steel Park in Visakhapatnam

Hyderabad headquartered infrastructure engineering and supply chain management firm Lalitanjali Group is planning to set up the country’s first steel industrial park in Vishakhapatnam which will house 15 to 20 ancillary units guided by a pilot company, and facilities like an effluent treatment plant, water treatment plant etc. The overall capacity of the upcoming industrial park will be approximately 7-8 lakh tonnes, with captive power of over 25 mw, according to the company’s statement here yesterday. “This offers a huge business opportunity for companies in India, as the landing costs of raw materials from other countries is cheaper by USD 5-6 in Vizag compared to other states,” said CEO of Lalitanjali Group, Rahul Rao.

MSMEs in Chennai struggling to survive

The economic slowdown and power shortage have taken a toll on small firms in Chennai – a fifth of micro, small and medium units in and around Chennai have shut down, according to S Sivagnanam, Additional Industry Advisor, MSME Development Institute. “There has been a drop in demand for their products and lower production capacities due to power cuts are hurting,” he said on the sidelines of a seminar organised by the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry here on Friday. A majority of the firms were auto component suppliers while units engaged in manufacture of chemicals, plastics and leather products have also fallen to the tough business environment.

Gujarat clocks double digit growth in pharma exports

While the overall pharma exports from the country is likely to miss target, exports from Gujarat has, however, managed to clock double digit growth last fiscal. According to latest data from the Indian Drug Manufacturers’ Association (IDMA), India has exported pharmaceutical products including bulk drugs and formulations of Rs 90,649.90 crore during 2013-14, which falls short of the government export target of $25 billion (around Rs 1.5 lakh crore). As per a Ministry of Commerce strategy paper, “As against a target of $25 billion for 2013-14, it is estimated that only $ 17 billion can be achieved – i.e. nearly 70 per cent of the target.”

Karnataka industry consumers furious over power tariff hike

Power consumers in Karnataka today expressed strong disappointment over revision in tariff by the regulator. The state consumers, particularly the small industries continue to suffer load shedding and voltage fluctuations while the regulator has allowed revision in the power rates. “It is unfortunate that in spite of the repeated plea of small industries, the KERC has not responded to the demands of the small industries in deferring the increase in the tariff rate without improving the environment in which the energy is being supplied,” Karnataka Small Scale Industries Association (KASSIA) today said in a press statement.

Indo-Pak trade normalization could be a game-changer: Biswal

Normalisation of trade relationship between India and Pakistan could be a game changer in regional connectivity and integration, Obama Administration’s point person for South and Central Asia has said. “Clearly one of the biggest obstacles to regional connectivity is India and Pakistan. Trade normalisation between these two historic rivals could be a game-changer,” Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, Nisha Desai Biswal told lawmakers during a Congressional hearing yesterday. “We have been encouraged by positive signs from Islamabad and New Delhi that things may be moving in the right direction. We are hopeful that we will see strong leadership from both governments following India’s election,” she said.

India steps up pressure on Switzerland to share bank information on tax evaders

Taking a strong stance, India has warned Switzerland that reluctance to share tax related information may impact economic co-operation between the two countries. India is pursuing Switzerland to share information on certain accounts held by some Indians in HSBC’s Swiss bank branches. These were account details of those against whom cases of ‘incriminating evidence of tax evasion’ have been found here. But, the Swiss authorities have been reluctant to share information. This led to the Finance Minister P Chidambaram writing a strongly worded letter to the Swiss Finance Minister Eveline Widmer Schlumpf.

Formalise trade in rice seeds between India & Bangladesh: Study

India and Bangladesh need to formalise bilateral trade in rice seeds as local farmers on both side of the border are using them for cultivation through illegal channels, says a study. “At present, the cooperation between India and Bangladesh in the area of rice seed is almost negligible. Despite several instances of informal movement of high yielding variety (HYV) rice seed across the border, formal trade is conspicuous by its absence,” said the Cuts International study. The availability and accessibility of rice seeds can be significantly improved through cooperation between the two countries, it said.

Saudi Arabia    

Saudi Arabia bans import of chilli pepper from India

Indian chilli has been banned in Saudi Arabia, the fifth-largest importer of fresh vegetables from India, citing the presence of high pesticide residues in it. “We have been informed about the Saudi Ministry of Agriculture’s decision to ban chilli pepper beginning May 30,” said Surinder Bhagat, second secretary of politics and commerce at the Indian Embassy. “We are in touch with the Saudi authorities to resolve the issue,” he told PTI today over phone. An official at the Ministry of Agriculture said that the decision to ban the import of chilli peppers was made after a sample testing from the Indian shipment showed the presence of high levels of pesticides.

    • Winners with Criminal Cases: Out of the 541 winners analysed, 186 (34%) winners have declared criminal cases against themselves. Out of 521winners analysed during Lok Sabha 2009 elections, 158 (30%) winners had declared criminal cases against themselves
    • Winners with Serious Criminal Cases: 112 (21%) winners have declared serious criminal cases including cases related to murder, attempt to murder, communal disharmony, kidnapping, crimes against women etc. Out of 521 winners analysed during Lok Sabha 2009 elections, 77 (15%) winners had declared serious criminal cases against themselves.
    • Winners with cases related to murder: 9 winners have declared cases related to murder. Out of these 4 winners have been fielded by BJP, 1 winner has been fielded by INC, LJP, RJD, Swabhimani Paksha each and one winner is an independent. 
    • Winners with cases related to Attempt to Murder: 17 winners have declared cases of attempt to murder. Out of these, 10 winners have been fielded by BJP, 2 winners by AITC and one winner each from INC, NCP, RJD, Shiv Sena and Swabhimani Paksha.
    • Winners with cases related to Crimes against Women: Adv.Joice George an Independent from Idukki constituency, Kerala has declared a case related to assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty (IPC Section-354). Ahir Hansraj Gangaram of BJP from Chandrapur constituency, Maharashtra has declared a case related to Kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her marriage, etc. (IPC Section-366).
    • Winners with cases related to causing Communal Disharmony: 16 winners declared cases related to causing communal disharmony. Out of these, 12 winners were fielded by BJP and 1 winner by TRS, Pattali Makkal Katchi, All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen and AIUDF each.

Beginning Of Modi Era

The people have delivered a staggering verdict beyond all expectations in favour of Mr. Modi. This is historical and reflects the people’s hope for structural change in India’s development paradigm.
The pan-Indian victory across rural, urban, tribal and constituencies dominated by different communities reflects the deep and widespread aspirations of the new Indian.Indians whoare looking for employment and not doles; empowerment and not entitlements; growth and not mere distribution and transfers; good governance and not an executive devoid of direction and purpose. In short, Bharat with its explodigaspirations has come centre stage. It has pushed aside firmly and perhaps decisively Macaulay’s India that took its reference from the West.
Real Inda, that is Bharat can now rise anew, delve deep and wide into its vast pool of talent and resources and use it to strive to become Shreshta Bharat. An India which stands tall among the comity of nations on the basis of its own ahievements.
Unprecedented
This is the dream that Mr Modi has sold to the electorate and they have seized it with both hands. It is also clear that the dream of a prosperous Indiahas been supported across communities and regions.
This puts a mountain of expectation on Mr Modi’s shoulders. He has asked for a vote for himself and he has got it in numbers that have left us and him speechless.
And with the absolute majority for BJP on its own, he has no conceivable excuse for not delivering the dream. All BJP leaders, big and small, old and young, from urban and rural regions should now jettison any differences they may have had and put their shoulder to the task under the leadership of the man who has won them this unprecedented victory by his indefatigable hard work, single-minded focus, and an organizational capability that has left all others biting the dust. Now is the time to come together to take India forward and make it a Smridh, Sashakt, Shrestha and Swabhmani Bharat by the time we celebrate the centenary of our independence.
Mr Modi has to rise above all social divisions and emerge and establish himself as the leader of all Indians. The electorate has already recognised him as such by giving him 26 out of 26 seats in Gujarat and an unprecedented and unbelievable 70 out of 80 seats in UP.
Such a verdict could not conceivably be achieved by the support of any particular community. But no society, and certainly not India with its syncretic Ganga-Jumni tehzib that Mr Modi talked about in his speech in Varanasi, can develop and progress if a significant proportion of people remain wary and alienated. So he will do well to reassure those who have not voted for him that he and his government will deliver fair, just and equitable governance to all Indians irrespective of political or ideological identity. And here actions speak far louder than words. Will he for example consider appointing his most trusted and capable aide to oversee the implementation of Sachar Committee report?
Consensual
The people have shown that they do not accept the diminution of the Prime Minister’s office or the arrogance of any royal family or dynasty. In Mr Modi, the Indian people have elected a leader who will ensure that the PMO re-emerges as the captain’s cabin with the captain having a firm hand on the rudder. But at the same time by promising that he will govern collectively not only with his cabinet but also with the chief ministers during his campaign, he has shown his understanding of the scale, complexity and diversity of the Indian reality. He will therefore not succumb to the temptations of over-centralization. And that will reinforce and enhance federalism with its huge advantage of finding and implementing region specific solutions. That will provide the provinces with the degrees of freedom and fiscal space necessary to make the Indian development experience a beautiful mosaic of regional paradigms.
Integrity
Given his impeccable track record of the highest level of personal integrity and honesty, I am convinced that Mr. Modi will resist all temptations for appointing anybody who has even the faintest taint of financial corruption, moral turpitude or unethical behaviour to the cabinet or high government positions. He will do well to adhere to his own high standards of personal integrity and select those who, in the best traditions of the Sangh, desire to serve the country and are not pursuing an agenda of personal aggrandizement or material gains. His team of selfless volunteers, who have worked tirelessly, many having stayed away from their families for months, represent such a band of highly motivated individuals committed to India’s cause. He will have to find similar set of individuals to fill key positions. At no cost can Mr. Modi allow his government to be seen as another version of the UPA government full of self serving opportunists, willing to switch sides at a drop of a ballot. People’s strong desire for clean and effective governance has to be respected and responded.
Mr Modi has built up a tremendous reputation for project execution and also for being open to innovative ideas. Armed with these strengths he can deliver on his promise of ‘minimum government and maximum governance.’ He has to keep open as many windows as possible for new and innovative ideas to reach him and to adopt a ‘revolving door’ policy for bringing in talent from the private sector, civil society and NRIs. The entry of such professional talent will improve governance and help implement key projects. This can be one of the key structural changes in sustaining rapid growth on the one hand and simultaneously ensuring effective delivery of public services on the other. This is a new beginning for Indian democracy as it hopefully spells the end of dynasty, identity based and pseudo secularist parties. The onus of delivering on these hopes and exploding aspirations is on Mr. Modi’s broad shoulders. I wish him God speed. Not just India, but the world wants him to succeed because India’s success means that development, democracy and diversity can all come together in a successful experiment.

Kenyans Geoffrey and Lucy set course records under trying conditions at the TCS World 10K

18th May, 2014, Bengaluru: On a day when no one predicted fast timings, Geoffrey Kamworoor-Kipsang obliterated the six-year-old course record with an excellent 27:44 clocking while Lucy Kabuu led a Kenyan podium sweep in the women’s race, also with a brilliant new time of 31:48, in the 7th edition of TCS World 10K Bangalore.

Pacemaker Daniel Salel, a silver medalist in 10000m at Delhi Commonwealth Games four years ago, led the runners through the first half of the race in 13:57.   Defending champion Alex Oloitiptip and his Kenyan teammate Kamworor were in the lead group, as also Ethiopian Kinde Atanaw.  Incidentally the Ethiopian has the fastest time of 27:36, which he clocked during his second place finish at Prague last year, among those who took to the starting line in the men’s race today.   Atanaw was running alongside Kamworor before the Kenyan break-away after 6 km mark as the runners approached the popular Chinnaswamy Stadium—the Mecca of Cricket followers here.

Elaborating on his run, Kamwaror said, “I had one target when I returned to Bangalore and that was to break the course record. I am thrilled because I have done that today. I won the run because I was well-prepared though the conditions were not easy. I pushed after the 5km mark and did well. I will be back here again!”

Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei, who made his first international debut in Bangalore, came from behind to win in second place 40 seconds after the Kenyan.  Usually a cross-country runner who excelled at steeplechase at times, Cheptegei felt the conditions suitable for his maiden appearance here. Atanaw, as in previous years, filled the bronze position for Ethiopia in 28:35.   Last year’s winner Oloitiptip, could not overcome the humid weather conditions, finished on sixth.

As in the men’s race pacemaker Beatrice Mutai did the front-running and led a group of 10 women in the race that started at 8:25 a.m.    Having performed her duty, Mutai started trailing behind after the 4km mark where Kenyan Joyce Chepkirui emerged as a leader and covered the distance at 12:36.  Teammate Lucy Kabuu, former Commonwealth Games gold medalist in 10000m and winner of Airtel Delhi Half-Marathon three years ago, along with Linet Masai joined the fray with Chepkirui in the remaining part of the race.

Both Kabuu and Chepkirui pulled away from Masai after the 6km mark and started running neck-to-neck for the next kilometer until the duo passed the Vidhan Saudha, a magnificent building-structure alongside the race route which is housing the state legislative assembly of Karnataka.   Kabuu applied pressure when she entered another of Bangalore’s landmark Cubbon Park while Chepkirui struggling hard to maintain the pace.  However Chepkirui, who is holding a marvellous 30:37 clocked during her golden finish at Berlin last year, could not survive the increasing tempo of Kabuu in the waning stages of the race and swept away the title in 31:48.  To her satisfaction Chepkirui also improved the previous record of 31:58 which stood in the name of Ethiopian Yimer Wude since 2010, as she timed 31:55 to better it on that shiny Sunday.    Masai made it a 1-2-3 affair for the Kenyans in 32:28.  It was a second time that Kenyans have made a podium sweep here after the 2012 edition.

“I thank almighty God, who made me win today. I am delighted also because I have established a new course record. I was comfortable throughout the race but decided to make my move after the 8km mark. I am glad it worked and I have won today”, said an overjoyed Kabuu.

Both the winners – Geoffrey Kamworor and Lucy Kabuu – earned a course record jackpot of USD 7,500 besides their first place prize purse of USD 21,000 each.   The total prize pot of the race is USD 170,000.

Trained under J.S. Bhatia, it was third-time lucky for Army lad B.C. Tilak in Bangalore in 30:26.  Anish Thapa, hails from Meghalaya, found the weather conditions hot and humid yet managed to finish second (30:38) behind Tilak on his debut over the 10K course.  Last year’s Asian Grand Prix winner Nitendra Singh Rawat was third at 30:47.  All the three runners have been attached with different units of the Indian Army.

Swati Gadhave won the women’s section among the Indian runners by leaving behind some of the leading names in the sport.  Swati, second in 2012 and sixth in 2011 at Bangalore, ran a tactical race when most of the other runners found it difficult to keep up with the conditions on the road.   Her time of 37:22 was second slowest winning time here after local girl Preeti L. Rao’s 37:47 from 2010.  Marathoners Jayashree Boragee (37:35) and Supriya Patil (37:46) finished on in the next two spots behind Gadhave.

Brand Ambassador and legendary athlete Carl Lewis encouraged the participants along with other celebrities who had come over here to support the ever-increasing number of entrants in Namma Run.
