Vatsal Sheth backed by the Khans
22042014
Vatsal Sheth and the Khan Brothers share a very special and fond affinity towards each other. Arbaaz Khan recently tweeted cheering Vatsal for his newest endeavor – ‘Ek Hasina Thi’ which premiered on Star Plus this week. On the show Vatsal dawns the character of Shaurya Goenka, a rich spoilt playboy, care free and over confident banking heavily on the financial health of his parents. Vatsal is known to have taken the Khan Brothers especially Salman as his role model and aspires to reach similar heights of success. He apes the superstar’s signature style of pinning his phone against the shoulder with his ear while having a long conversation and draws constant inspiration from the Megastar. Among all the Khan Brothers, however, Vatsal shares his closest ties with Sohail. Their friendship is one to envy for and this was even reflected on the silver screen when they worked together in ‘Heroes’. Sohail made time and ensured he was there in person to congratulate Vatsal during the recently concluded launch of ‘Ek Hasina Thi.’ One wouldn’t want to mess around with Vatsal – the newest brat on the small screen who is amply supported with the love and affection of the Dabaang trio – Arbaaz, Salman and Sohail Khan.
Tune into EK HASINA THI every Monday – Saturday at 08:00 p.m only on STAR PLUS

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan: Modi’s campaign resembles a soap launch in the market:

Modi’s campaign resembles a soap launch in the market: Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan
Mumbai: With a just a day left for the model code of conduct to come into effect Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan stepped up his attack on the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Monday.
BJP is marketing Modi like a packaged product by a marketing company. “Modi’s campaign is similar to a new soap being launched with appropriate advertising. One can look at the posters of BJP. Only Modi is being sold, and no other senior party leaders of BJP feature in the advertisement,” said Chavan.
Chavan was addressing a public meeting to step up the election campaign of Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) Sanjay Dina Patil from the Mumbai North-East constituency.
Referring to Modi’s visit to Mumbai, Chavan said that all Modi is doing is making personal remarks against Congress and NCP leaders to enthuse the crowd which has gathered. “Neither that man (Modi), nor his party, has the wisdom or vision to lead the country,” said Chavan.
Chavan said that the NCP-Congress regime in Maharashtra is far ahead in terms of development, and that Modi is riding on a fake wave of having developed Gujarat. “We have created a case study of development in each village of Maharashtra, and Modi is welcome to come and see it for himself,” said Chavan
Chavan stressed on the progress that the UPA government has made in the last 10 years, and urged the voters to think about the ideology that they would want to vote to power.
“It is important to think what kind of ideology we want to elect for next 5 years. The economic progress made in last 10 years in India has been unprecedented. We have taken huge decisions on developmental issues for agriculture, health, primary education, right to information, and food security bill.”
Last time we chose all 6 candidates of the Congress-NCP alliance in Mumbai, said Chavan and pointed out the developmental work undertaken in Mumbai.
“We have the first monorail, the metro rail is functional, the Santa Cruz Chembur Link Road has been thrown open and so has the Milan subway flyover and 17 other flyovers. And it is important to mention that we have been able to construct 25,000 public toilets for people residing in Mumbai,” said Chavan.
Whereas Modi’s right hand man Amit Shah prefers to make hate speech on Muzzaffar Nagar riots. “When we go to vote on April 24, we all should make the right choice to take this country forward,” said Chavan.
Chavan visit to Mulund on Monday ensured that both Congress and NCP left no stone unturned to retain the Mumbai North-East constituency in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The constituency has seen top leaders including NCP chief Sharad Pawar, deputy chief minister of Maharashtra Ajit Pawar, home minister of Maharashtra RR Patil campaign to prop the election campaign on Sanjay Dina Patil.

Sumeet Sachdev returns to television after 4 years with Yeh Hai Aashiqui
~ The popular actor will be seen playing an author who is a victim of wrong perceptions but finds true love eventually ~
Known for his crust look and dashing personality, Sumeet Sachdev finally returns to television after a long sabbatical withbindass’ Yeh Hai Aashiqui. The charming actor is all set to play the protagonist in the upcoming episode which will make his most awaited come back extremely exciting. Yeh Hai Aashiqui chronicles unusual love stories every week and this time round, the show will bring forth an innocent love story of Rhea Ganguly who falls in love with Aseem Sen whom she once hated based on the rumor of him being a wife beater. In order to teach him a lesson, she transpires a plan to humiliate him in the college but, as truth cannot be kept under wraps for long, Rhea discovered the reality. She could not help falling in love with Aseem for his innocence and forgiveness when he finds out that Rhea had conspired against him.
Sumeet Sachdev will be seen as the lead actor; Aseem Sen. He will portray the character of a writer whose pseudonym is Eklavya. Attempting to run away from his past brings him to a college where he gets appointed as a professor, but his agonies are further aggravated when a girl named Rhea, played by popular ad face, Anupriya Goenka decides to expose the miseries of his past deeds in front of the college to embarrass him.
Talking about his return and the show, Sumeet said, “In the past as well, I was approached for Yeh Hai Aashiqui, and unfortunately at that time I could not go ahead with it. But, co-incidentally, I happened to watch that episode and I was impressed with the show; it was refreshing and different. This time round, I was geared up to make a come back on TV after 4 years with a great concept like Yeh Hai Aashiqui. Not only did I feel that I could fit the bill perfectly but, I was quite thrilled about playing a professor who a student falls in love with. I have never done romance and ‘Aseem’ was a bit of a challenge to me. But, it was the right choice, a good experience overall and gave the feel of a short film.” This talented lad gained household popularity with his unconventional and popular character, ‘Gomzy’ in the iconic show Kyuki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Known for his versatility, Sumeet also ventured in direction. He made his directorial debut in the short film Rehman Saheb Ko Phone Karna Hai.
Apart from Sumeet, Anupriya Goenka will be seen on the show romancing him as ‘Rhea’. Taking the audiences through this emotional journey of Aseem and Rhea, popular TV actor Rithvik Dhanjani will be hosting the show.

With Tremendous Response from Voters, Campaign Ends on High Note
Vows to continue challenging the Modi-fied Politics and Expose the Corruption of NCP
As the campaign for the 16th Lok Sabha draws to a closure today, the campaign witnessed tremendous response from wide range of people in the Mumbai North East constituency. This response and the large number of issues emerging is also because of the failure of Corporator, MLAs and MP in discharging their duties as elected representatives. None of them have taken any steps to curb the fundamental corruption involved in the projects. There has not been any attempt to policy making, focus on basic amenities and housing. We received a response from the people owing to the issues raised by us in the past few years and because of their faith in our continuous work on those issues.
Out of my nearly 40 years of work, the 17 years I worked in Mumbai has given me an inside out knowledge about the basic issues of the constituency. This election is important for us, as we seek larger representation of people in decision making and to continue raise those issue with more strength and vigour. Hence we make a pledge to implement all national level commitments by Aam Aadmi Party in its Manifesto and in the Mumbai Manifesto. Further, we issue a Mumbai North East specific prime issues pledge that we will leave no stone unturned to fulfil those. We also reiterate that all our efforts will be participatory, transparent and accountable, involving the people of the constituency across the caste-class-creed-gender differences, and political ideologies.
Hence we appeal to the voters to join us in these efforts, with all their strength and commitment, to bring in change and make our city corruption free. We will achieve this together with participation of people from all walks of life, contribution of professional skills and inputs from experts.
Modi’s lies and threat to not just secular fabric, but even dalits, adivasis and downtrodden
In a rally addressed by Modi in Mumbai yesterday he said that “Maharashtra would get electricity worth Rs 400 crores for free if the project (Sardar Sarovar Narmada project) was completed.” The blatant lie repeated for the second time in this election season is another attempt t to mislead the people. Maharashtra, which has also sacrificed a few thousands crores of revenue, by submergence of 33 hilly adivasi villages, will lose 9500 ha of land; parts of it are forests, in the Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP). Additionally she spends Rs.3000 crores in proportion to the 27% of power from the project. SSP is an interstate project, with financial commitment by each of the party states. How can then the power be free to Maharashtra?
While Modi builds his campaign on lies and twisted facts, he poses a serious threat to the secular fabric of the country. By his silence isn’t Modi supporting Vishwa Hindu Parishad’;s (VHP) president Pravin Togadia’s communal venom in Bhavnagar by saying “evict Muslims from Hindu areas”?
His outlook towards the dalits and socially marginalised is evident from his reported statement he made during the release of his book ‘SamajikSamrasata’. He was reported saying that dalits were like mentally retarded children. What an irony, somebody who does not respect the dalits and marginalised writes a book with its title SamajikSamrasata (Social Equity)!
Last year, The Gujarat High Court ordered the Gujarat government to strictly adhere to the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of) Forest Rights Act, 2006, and the rules framed thereafter under this central Act.The order came on a public interest litigation (PIL) by a group of NGOs, which said the state government was violating the provisions of the Act in deciding the claims of tribals and had arbitrarily rejected more than one lakh such claims.
It will be a figment of our imagination if we do buy in the messages communicated by Modi via his aggressive advertising methods. He has a proven track record for being anti poor, anti dalit, anti adivasi and minorities and could leave the country divided that is built on the foundations of secularism, tolerance and respect to each other.
We will stand by dalits, who apart from asserting their identity and dignity, face the challenge of getting the basic rights, as upheld in the Constitution, as envisioned by Dr.BabasahebAmbedkar. The positive discrimination and reservation will be implemented only when they stand united.
If Modi around, can NCP be far behind?
We will challenge the corrupt party NCP, who are involved in scams worth thousands of crores. Some of them include, irrigation scam, Gosikhurd canal scam, sugar factory scam, even the former Member of Parliament seem to have contributed to corrupt practices in using the MPLAD funds. By not raising the corruption issues in this Constituency, such as allotment of MHADA land, rehabilitation of slum dwellers and in infrastructure projects, he has permitted the corrupt practices.
He cannot shrug the responsibility of his inability to curb corruption, failure to address the fundamental issues of the constituency and not being around for the people when the people needed him most.
We will launch enquiries into all those allegations of corruption once the elections are over.
We appeal to all voters of the Constituency to come out in large numbers on the voting day, cast their vote and be a part of the democratic process. We appeal to the voters to cast their vote in favour of honesty, accountability and good governance and against corruption, communalism and injustice.
Yours Truly,
MedhaPatkar

‘Scenarios of Kannada Activism in Bengaluru’
22042014
Nehru Memorial Museum and Library
cordially invites you to a Public Lecture
(in the ‘India in Transition’ series)
at 3.00 pm on Wednesday, 23rdApril, 2014
in the Seminar Room, First Floor, Library Building
on
‘Scenarios of Kannada Activism in Bengaluru’
by
Prof. Chandan Gowda,
Azim Premji University,
Bengaluru.
Abstract:
Bengaluru has seen a proliferation of pro-Kannada organizations since the early years of this century. The perceived decline in significance of Kannada and its speakers in the state’s capital appears a paramount concern for them. Many of these groups have found support from major institutional forces, including political parties, the local film industry, and the heads of Hindu religious establishments. How do they conceive the Kannada cause and the strategies necessary for securing it? What are the continuities and discontinuities between their activist concerns and those of their predecessor outfits? Mapping the shifting contours of Bengaluru-centred Kannada activism over the last few decades helps grasp the changing political and cultural milieu in the city.
Speaker:
Prof. Chandan Gowda is Professor of Social Science at Azim Premji University, Bengaluru. His research interests include social theory, Indian normative traditions, and Kannada literature and cinema. In addition to his academic publications, he has written extensively for newspapers and published translations of Kannada fiction and non-fiction in English. He completed his dissertation research at the Department of Sociology, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 2007. He is presently completing a book on the cultural politics of development in old Mysore state.

Dr. Anne Hammerstad Lecturer in International Relations

Centre for Policy Research is delighted to invite you to a talk by
Dr. Anne Hammerstad
Lecturer in International Relations
School of Politics and International Relations
University of Kent
On
The Rise and Decline of a Global Security Actor: UNHCR, Refugee Protection and Security
On the occasion of the launch of her new book, published by Oxford University Press
Discussant: Hans Friedrich Schodder,
Deputy Chief of Mission, UNHCR New Delhi, India
Time: 3:00 – 4:30 pm
Venue: Conference Room, Centre for Policy Research, DharamMarg, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi – 110021
Abstract:
Dr Hammerstad presents her new book, which investigates the rise of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) as a global security actor, following the refugee agency through some of the past two decades’ major conflict-induced humanitarian crises, including Afghanistan, Bosnia, Iraq, Kosovo and eastern Zaire/Congo. She analyses UNHCR’s momentous transformation from a small, timid legal protection agency to the world’s foremost humanitarian actor playing a central role in the international response to the many wars of the tumultuous last decade of the 20th century. Then, as the 21st century set in, the agency’s political prominence waned. It remai ns a major humanitarian actor, but the polarised post-9/11 period and a worsening protection climate for refugees and asylum seekers spurred UNHCR to abandon its claim to be a global security actor and return to a more modest, quietly diplomatic role.
The rise of UNHCR as a global security actor is placed within the context of the dramatic shift in perceptions of national and international security after the end of the Cold War. Prominent among ‘new’ security issues were the perceived threats posed by refugees and asylum seekers to international security, state stability, and societal cohesion. ‘The Rise and Decline of a Global Security Actor’ investigates UNHCR’s response to this new international environment; adopting, adapting and finally abandoning a security discourse on the refugee problem.
In this seminar Dr Hammerstad will draw lines from the findings of her book to discuss some key questions on the future of international humanitarian action in the polarized and dangerous environments of countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria and Somalia. How can UN agencies and NGOs avoid the stamp of being part of ‘western agendas’? Is principled, neutral, needs-based humanitarian aid in conflict zones possible? How can it best be achieved – or at least approximated?
Speaker’s Biography:
Dr Anne Hammerstad is a lecturer in International Relations at the University of Kent, research associate of the South African Institute of International Affairs, and recent Global Uncertainties Fellow with the British Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). She received her DPhil from Oxford University, MSc from the London School of Economics, and BA from the University of Oslo. Her doctoral thesis won the 2003 thesis prize from the British International Studies Association.

New Delhi April 22, 2014

Katha fosters the love of learning in children through its innovative education model, of active story-based learning, supported integrally by its book publishing program.
The set of initiatives proposed by Britannica includes providing digital knowledge and learning products to Katha schools and learning centers for underprivileged children in India, as part of its corporate social responsibility. Britannica will also convert titles owned by Katha into eBooks and distribute them worldwide as a part of its eBook program under the overall eLibrary initiative.
From its repertoire of children’s titles and stories sourced from many Indian languages, Katha will compile a Literature Reader in English as a curricular textbook for Classes 1-8, which Britannica will publish and market in India. Britannica will, in turn, leverage its channels to offer the Literature Reader to schools abroad that follow Indian curriculum, as part of its curricular offering.
A memorandum, to this effect, was signed between Mr. Sarvesh Shrivastava, Managing Director– South Asia, Encyclopaedia Britannica, and Mrs. Geeta Dharmarajan, Founder and Executive Director of Katha.
Mr. Jorge Cauz, President of Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc., is visiting India to promote digital learning in the South Asia region. Mrs. Geeta Dharmarajan, the creative and innovative force behind Katha’s work, for over the 25 years, said, “It gives me great joy that as Katha celebrates its silver jubilee this year, we join forces with such a respected and world-renowned company – Encyclopaedia Britannica – to get great Indian stories into the hands of children worldwide and share India’s rich cultural heritage with them. We are living in exciting times where technology is bringing great changes to the educational possibilities for our children. Our partnership with Britannica helps us realize our dream of inspiring children to learn, enabling them to become reader-leaders.”
A visibly touched Mr. Jorge Cauz, who visited the Katha school located in a slum in South Delhi, said, “I firmly believe that trustworthy digital content coupled with highly motivated teachers, especially like the ones I met at Katha, can play a significant role in promoting literacy among the underprivileged”.
Known for its 32-volume Encyclopaedia Britannica for over two centuries, Britannica has moved beyond its traditional base of reference works to broader educational markets, such as classroom curriculum, e-learning and language instruction, from a print only company to an innovative provider of digital education products.
Mr. Sarvesh Shrivastava, Encyclopaedia Britannica Managing Director–South Asia, shared that in the past five years Britannica India has offered trustworthy knowledge and learning solutions, including textbooks, interactive student and teacher resources. Its teacher training materials help promote higher order thinking skills in the PreK-10 segment for English, Math, Science, Social Studies, General Knowledge and IT. By adding Katha’s story-based learning from Katha to its learning solutions, Britannica’s learner engagement will be greatly enhanced.

EYE CARE DURING SUMMER
22042014
Summer is the time of dealing with lots of heat, dust and excessive strong sun light. Just as we use sunscreen to keep the sun’s UV rays from harming our skin, UV treatment in eyeglass lenses blocks those same rays from damaging our eyes.
New Delhi, 21 April 2014: With onset of summer the intense heat and light of sun poses immense danger to the eyes causing ocular discomfort, dryness, allergy, etc. Dr. Sanjay Dhawan, Director, Ophthalmology, Fortis Healthcareinforms Long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation in summer wreak havoc on eyes & is associated with severe eye ailments such as cataract a leading cause of blindness and it can also prematurely age your eye lenses. It is also a factor in formation of non-cancerous growths of tissue (pterygium), loss of vision (macular degeneration) and cancer of the eyelid.
Dr. Sanjay Dhawan informs “Those who have to be in exposure to UV rays for long time are more likely to have painful temporary eye injuries called photokeratitis and photoconjunctivitis. As the heat of summer gets the effect of UV rays double in this season those who live at sea side area or desert are at increased risk of eye damage because the UV rays reflections off water, sand and concrete & glasses can inflame cornea and conjunctiva within minutes. This is like burning the sensitive, skin-like tissue covering your eyeballs and lining your eyelids adds Dr. Sanjay.
Hence, it is suggested to avoid direct exposure to ultraviolet rays using UV protective contact lenses and Sunglasses. Sunglasses help reduce the amount of light that reaches our eyes. It increases our comfort and reduces the painful side effects of intense heat. Sunglasses should be worn during daylight hours even when the weather is cloudy or hazy. Your sunglasses should provide more than 95 percent UV protection.
Most people believe that darker sunglasses provide better protection, but that is not necessarily the case. To protect eyes from intense heat always opt for sunglasses which covers whole eyes and should block both UVA and UVB radiation. The lens tint should block 80 percent of transmissible light but no more than about 90 percent of light, or it will be hard for you to see.
Ø Take care that your contact lenses do not come in contact with intense heat, during summers avoid using AC’s if you are suffering from eye infections caused by intense heat as it can increase your eye problem.
Ø If you wear UV protective contact lenses, you still need to wear a pair of sunglasses to protect the area of the eye that is not covered by the lens.
Ø Wash your eyes with cold water twice a day, avoiding rubbing them, stay away from dusty areas, wear protective eye glasses and use eye drops under the supervision of an eye specialist.
Ø See a sunglass lens on how much UV radiation it absorbs. Neutral gray, amber, brown, and green are good colors to choose from.
Ø Drink plenty of water throughout the day, it protects your eyes from puffiness and swelling and splash cool water on your eyes at regular intervals, this relaxes stressed eyes and keeps your eyes hydrated.
Ø With daily routine work along with other parts of our body, eyes catch stresses too. Exercise is good for relieving the stresses off from eyes. The best eye care exercise that you can practice is to close your eyes and pressing them with your palms. This is handful for resting your eyes. You should do this eye care exercise daily for about 5 to 10 minutes.
Ø Apart from self eye care, a regular checkup is must during summer. As the doctor can rightly advice you to keep eyes soothing in the hot weather of summer.

National Urdu Editors’ Conference on Routine Immunization “Are you up to date?”

National Urdu Editors’ Conference on Routine Immunization
“Are you up to date?”
“Are you up to date?”
New Delhi, April 22, 2014: UNICEF in partnership with Shikhar organized the Second National Urdu Editors’ Conference on Routine Immunization in the capital today. The day long brainstorming focused on how various stakeholders including media can highlight the importance of vaccination for saving children’s lives. Several eminent Urdu editors, doctors including Unani medicine practitioners and academicians attended the meet.
While India has one of the largest immunization programs in the world, (in terms of number of number of children covered and geographical reach), it still reports deaths of about 1.4 million children[1] (below the age of five years) annually. These deaths are largely from preventable diseases such as pneumonia, diarrhoea, malnutrition and new born complications like sepsis. A highly cost-effective way of preventing these fatal diseases is Routine Immunization, which is one of the most successful public health initiatives and can prevent around 400,000 child deaths each year in India alone.
The round table was organized ahead of the World Immunization Week, and the theme for this year’s edition is “Are you up to date?” which is a direct appeal to parents and caregivers to inform themselves about immunization and make sure that their families are protected with vaccines. The conference highlighted the need to reach unimmunized children in hard-to-reach areas and belonging to vulnerable communities. It also dwelt on strategies to increase in-depth coverage and analysis articles by the media on Routine Immunization (RI).
Dr. Khwaja Ikramuddin, Director, National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language and Ms Caroline Den Dulk, Chief of Communication, UNICEF India opened the discussions and the experts included Mr.Syed Faisal Ali, Editor, Almi Sahara, Mr.Shakeel Akhtar, Bureau Chief, BBC Urdu, Mr. Yusuf Ansari, Editor Channel One, Mr.Wasim ul Haq, Editor, Akhbare Mashriq, Ms.Waseem Rasheed, Editor, Chauthi Duniya, and Mr. Khalid Anwar,Editor Hamara Samaj.
Addressing the gathering, Mr S.M.Khan, Director General, DD News, called for a collaborative effort by various media to ensure a 360 degree coverage of health issues including RI. He said that Doordarshan’s vast network and use of easy-to-understand Urdu language in its programs, could be leveraged to reach out to migrants and populations in difficult-to-reach regions. Giving a commitment on behalf of the Urdu editors to ensure better and informed coverage of RI nationally, Mr Khan emphasized on the need to empower the journalists’ to cover RI in a more sustained manner.
Dr. Khwaja Ikramuddin, Director NCPUL urged Urdu media houses to regularly come out with news reports and editorials on immunization among minorities. He said that inadequate number of health journalists and their lack of in-depth knowledge on the issue, are a deterrent in ensuring coverage of such topics.
Participants emphasized that use of local language can reinforce instant message recall and brand recognition of immunization and child survival, as is the case of the RI tagline Bhool Na Jana Tika Lagwana.
Emphasizing UNICEF’s focus on equity, Ms Caroline Den Dulk, said, “ All children have the right to survive and thrive and vaccines protect children for a lifetime. This World Immunization Week we are partnering with diverse stakeholders to keep the focus on reaching out to the most vulnerable and marginalized children. Radio and Urdu media play a significant role in strengthening these efforts”
Participating in the deliberations, Prof Akhtrul Wasay, Commissioner for Linguistic Minorities said, “We cannot expect to create massive awareness on this critical child survival issue without active participation of diverse stakeholders including the media, academic institutions, young people and other opinion leaders.”
It was decided at the conference that several capacity-building workshops would be organized from time to time for the Urdu journalists to help them be equipped with in-depth knowledge and thereby come up with write ups, editorials and edutainment based television programs on RI.
