Sanctions to remain until North Korea achieves final denuclearisation

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo today said that sanctions against North Korea will remain in place until it achieves final, fully-verified denuclearization. Pompeo made the remarks at a joint press conference following a trilateral meeting between foreign ministers of the United States, Japan and South Korea in Tokyo. Pompeo said as the momentum of President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s historical summit builds up, the US, South Korea and Japan continue to strengthen their trilateral cooperation to achieve the goal set out in Singapore. Pompeo arrived in Tokyo yesterday after wrapping up a visit to North Korea. He said North Korea reaffirmed its commitment to complete denuclearization, and they had detailed and substantive discussions about the next step towards fully-verified and complete denuclearization.

England beat Sweden 2-0

Harry Maguire and Dele Alli scored as England comfortably defeated Sweden 2-0 in Samara on Saturday to reach the World Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1990.
Leicester defender Maguire headed in the opening goal from a corner on 30 minutes, with Alli adding a second just before the hour.
Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford then produced a series of crucial saves in the final half-hour to seal England´s long-awaited spot in the last four.
It was just a second England victory over Sweden in nine competitive meetings, and sets up a clash with either hosts Russia or Croatia on July 11 in Moscow for a place in the final.
Southgate stuck with the same team that overcame Colombia on penalties in the last 16, while Sebastian Larsson returned for Sweden after missing the 1-0 win over Switzerland through suspension.
Viktor Claesson drilled over for Sweden early on with an ambitious attempt from distance, while Harry Kane, the tournament´s leading scorer with six goals, dragged wide after a penetrating run by Raheem Sterling.
Sweden manager Janne Andersson had warned his side England were a match for them at set-pieces, and so it proved when Maguire connected with Ashley Young´s corner after a low-key first half hour.
Maguire outjumped the much smaller Emil Forsberg to nod low into the corner, as England scored for the eighth time in Russia from a dead-ball situation.
The lively Sterling should have doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time when he brilliantly controlled Jordan Henderson´s lofted pass, but he was unable to find a way past Robin Olsen and his follow-up was blocked by Andreas Granqvist.
Pickford had relatively little to do in a quiet first half, but the England goalkeeper produced a vital stop to claw away a Marcus Berg header minutes after the restart.

Croatia beat Russia on penalties

Croatian president Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic became a meme star when she traveled economy to watch her team play, but her fame was sealed when she wore her team’s shirt to sit among the suits for her countrymen’s win over Russia.
On Saturday night in Sochi, Grabar-Kitarovic’s red-and-white check shirt was initially concealed beneath a piercing red pantsuit, and the opening exchange of goals as celebrated by handshakes with Russia’s prime minister Dmitry Medvedev, who was sitting one place away, with FIFA head Gianni Infantino between them.
Croatia finally ended Russia’s unlikely World Cup dream when they won 4-3 on penalties to eliminate the gallant hosts in a dramatic quarter-final which ended 2-2 after extra time on Saturday.
Ivan Rakitic stroked home the winning penalty to send Croatia into a semi-final against England after Mario Fernandes dramatically equalised for Russia with five minutes of extra time remaining, only to miss a crucial kick in the shootout.
Both teams had also won on penalties in their second-round matches, with Russia beating Spain, but the hosts’ marksmanship let them down this time.
Fyodor Smolov saw Russia’s first penalty saved by Danijel Subasic and, although Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev saved a Mateo Kovacic kick, the hosts’ fate was sealed when Fernandes, turning from hero to villain, fired completely wide from their third attempt.
Denis Cheryshev rifled Russia in front with a long-range thunderbolt, his fourth goal of the tournament, in the 31st minute before Andrej Kramaric headed Croatia level six minutes before halftime.
Croatia then went ahead with a soft Domagoj Vida header in the eleventh minute of extra time but Russia still managed to bounce back through Fernandes.
Russia, who many feared could go out at the group stage after a dismal run over the previous two years, had already surpassed expectations by reaching the last eight, ousting Spain on the way.
“I’m very pleased at how the team played the whole World Cup, how it showed it character and worked to the maximum,” said Russia coach Stanislav Cherchesov.
After a lively opening, the game dropped off, with sessions of head tennis in midfield, but it was Russia’s more rustic approach which paid off first as they went ahead out of the blue.
Cheryshev collected the ball near the halfway line, exchanged passes with Artem Dzyuba and curled a 25-metre shot past Subasic.
But slack defending allowed Croatia to level eight minutes later.
Mario Mandzukic ran unchallenged into the penalty area and chipped a low ball back into the centre where unmarked Kramaric scored with a glancing header.
Croatia were agonisingly close to scoring on the hour when Russia’s defence failed to clear the ball and Ivan Perisic’s shot hit the inside of the post but rebounded harmlessly across the face of the goal.
Croatia, a shadow of the team which cruised through their group with maximum points, went ahead when Vida met a corner with a weak downward header which found its way through two sets of legs and rolled into the net.
To their eternal credit, Russia hit back again when Alan Dzagoev floated a free kick into the area and Fernandes powered home a header.
“I don’t have any emotions left at all,” said Russia midfielder Roman Zobnin.
“We left everything on the field.
But unfortunately, it didn’t happen for us today.

Moscow, Beijing interested in preserving Iran nuclear deal

Moscow and Beijing are interested in preserving and fully implementing the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iran’s nuclear program, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday. He made the statement at a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Vienna. “The situation is complex, but, just like China and other parties to the deal, we are committed to international law and the UN Security Council decision in which this plan was enshrined, thus becoming part of international law,” TASS quoted Lavrov as saying. The foreign ministers of Iran, the UK, Germany, China, Russia and France are meeting in the Austrian capital to discuss efforts to salvage the nuclear deal in the wake of Washington’s decision to withdraw from it.

N. Korea considers Switzerland next venue

North Korea is looking for a venue in Switzerland for a possible second summit between its leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump, Kyodo reported Friday, citing diplomatic sources. They say North Korean diplomats have been sent to Bern, Davos and Geneva to obtain firsthand information about international conference halls and hotels that could be used for a summit and talks involving China and South Korea. Kim studied at a junior high school in Bern. Geneva was considered a major candidate city for the first-ever North Korea-US summit, which took place in Singapore on June 12. In Singapore, Kim committed to the “complete” denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, while Trump promised to provide security guarantees to Pyongyang.

US, North Korea set up working groups

Washington and Pyongyang have agreed to establish working groups that would handle the most pressing issues on the bilateral agenda, in particular, the course of North Korea’s de-nuclearization efforts, State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a statement Friday. She said the groups’ work will be focused on “nitty gritty stuff,” without providing any specific details. The announcement came after US State Secretary Mike Pompeo held high-level talks with Kim Yong Chol, vice chairman of North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party Central Committee, in Pyongyang. The officials discussed a range of issues, including the return of the remains of US troops killed in the Korean War.

Iran condemns Netherland’s expulsion of two diplomats

Tehran has summoned the Dutch ambassador and condemned the Netherlands’ decision to deport two Iranian diplomats. Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi called the expulsion “unfriendly and unconstructive” and warned that Iran had the right to take reciprocal measures, according to Reuters, who cite the IRNA.
A senior Iranian official told Reuters the expulsions are aimed at harming Iranian efforts to salvage their nuclear deal. However, the expulsions also came soon after Belgium, France and Germany said they detained six people over an alleged bomb plot targeting a rally organised by an Iranian opposition group in Paris.

 The education system in India,

The education system in India, being influenced by British era and still continuing and damaging India and may be eye opener for education leaders. The data obtained from goggle. I am not claiming ownership and also not complete.
In the ancient times and before British era, Education was a matter of pride in India. As they say” F. W. Thomas was of the opinion that “Education is no exotic in India. There is no country where the love of learning had so early an origin or has exercised so lasting and powerful an influence” (Thomas, 1891, p. 1).”
Indian education had always been of a classical and spiritual rather of a practical nature. It was communicated through the sacred classical languages Sanskrit, Arabic and Persian (Ghosh, 1989, p.2). The Tols and Madrassas were the highest seminaries of learning meant for the specialists. For primary education, there were in the villages, Patsalas and smaller Gurus/teachers/ashrams etc.
During British era, till 19th Century, East India Company, established in 1600 A.D., did not evolve any definite educational policy. The ancient Indian education system prevailed. Then development of education system during the British period was determined by the needs of the colonial powers. The modern system of education came to be established in India during the British period at the cost of the traditional indigenous system. In his book, ‘Education in British India’ Arthur Howell says. “Education in India under the British Government was first ignored, then violently and successfully opposed, then conducted on a system now universally admitted to be erroneous and finally placed on its present footing” (1872:3).
Surprisingly in 1791 Jonathan Duncan opened a Bengal Sanskrit College at Benares for the cultivation of laws, literature and religion of the Hindus. Section 43 of the Charter Act 1813 had defined the objects of the educational policy, viz. ‘the revival and improvement of literature’, ‘the encouragement of learned natives of India’
Lord Macaulay, vide his Minute dated the 2nd of February, 1835 instituted an education policy in support of the British Raj which denigrated Indian languages and knowledge, established the hegemonic influence of English as medium of colonial ‘instruction’ (not education) and used the ploy of limitation of resources to “form a class who may be interpreters between us and the millions whom we govern – a class of persons Indian in blood and colour, but English in tastes, in opinions, in morals and in intellect …” (Chennai Declaration, 2012).
Lord William Bentinck (1828-1838) passed the Resolution on 7th March 1835 which was the first declaration of the British Government in the sphere of education in India. (Sharp, 1920:130-131): His Lordship in Council is of opinion that the great object of the British Government ought to be the promotion of European literature and science among the natives of India; and that all the funds appropriated for the purpose of education would be best employed on English education alone.
Bentinck’s proclamation gave birth to the following results in Indian education:
• The aims of education in India were determined by the British.
• The promotion of Western arts and sciences was acknowledged as the avowed object.
• The medium of education would be English.
• This proclamation promised to supply Government with English educated Indian servants cheap but capable at the same time.
Lord Hardinge in 1844 proclaimed that for services in public offices, preference would be given to those who were educated in English schools. The emphasis was on producing good clerks (Kochhar, 1982:7). This proclamation gave rise to two new castes in a caste – ridden country – English –knowing caste and non English knowing mass of people.
Hindu college was set up in 1817, which later came to be called Presidency College in 1857.
BY and large we continue these education policy till date. WHO WILL HAVE TIME TO STUDY, RESEARCH AND REVISE?

Cambodia election

General election campaigning kicked off in Cambodia on Saturday.
Prime Minister Hun Sen’s ruling party is virtually assured of victory as the main opposition party is absent.
At a rally in the capital Phnom Penh, Hun Sen told tens of thousands of supporters that his party will continue to improve people’s livelihood.
The governing Cambodian People’s Party began campaigning with 19 other political groups.
Voting will take place on July 29th.
The leader of the opposition is under arrest on charges of treason and the Supreme Court ordered the party to disband last year.
The opposition National Rescue Party had made large gains in the general election in 2013 and local elections last year.
The United States and the European Union suspended assistance for the current election.
