UNICEF emergency supplies for Rohingya refugee children arrive in Bangladesh
DHAKA, Bangladesh, 24 September 2017: The first consignment of UNICEF emergency supplies for hundreds of thousands of refugee Rohingya children and their families has arrived in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka.
The cargo plane arrived from Copenhagen with 100 tons of supplies comprising water purifying tablets, family hygiene kits, sanitary materials, plastic tarpaulins, recreational kits for children and other items.
The supplies will provide urgently-needed assistance to the estimated quarter of a million Rohingya child refugees who are among the 429,000 people who have fled across the border from neighbouring Myanmar in recent weeks. The refugees are now living in desperate conditions in southern Bangladesh.
“Ensuring that children and families have safe water for drinking and washing is absolutely essential in order to protect them against diarrhoea and other waterborne diseases,” said Edouard Beigbeder, UNICEF Representative in Bangladesh. “This is a very real threat given the current situation in the camps and makeshift settlements where the Rohingya are now living, especially amid the current heavy rains”.
The next consignments consisting of – school bags, tents, early childhood development kits, family hygiene and dignity kits, tarpaulin and nutrition materials – are also on its way to Bangladesh.
The supplies will be delivered by truck to the southern city of Cox’s Bazar, where an expanding international response is mobilising to address the plight of the growing number of Rohingya refugees arriving in Bangladesh.
UNICEF is seeking US$ 7.3 million in additional funding for its work in southern Bangladesh over the next three months, but additional funds will be necessary as the refugee population continues to grow.

Today, on the 2nd anniversary of the SDGs, thousands of citizens in over 107 countries and cities around the world, including in India will raise our voices and hold our world leaders accountable to #ACT4SDGs.
Through the We the People ACT4SDGs campaign thousands of campaigners and ordinary citizens have come together around the anniversary in over 650 eventsfrom Manila to Buenos Aires to Brussels, Mexico City and Nairobi, to create awareness on the SDGs, highlight local realities, and hold our governments accountable.
Wada Na Todo Abhiyan/ GCAP India initiated photo events with different partner Civil Society Organisations as well as marginalised communitiessuch as children, youth, women, Dalits, Tribals, urban poor and religious minorities atten landmark locations in the national capital city, New Delhi such as Lotus Temple, Red Fort, Rashtrapati Bhawan, India Gate, Parliament House, Sacred Heart Cathedral, Bangla Sahib Gurudwara, Qutub Minar, Jantar Mantar and Central Park in Connaught Place. Moreover, WNTA is running a Social Media Campaign for 15 days, i.e., from 10th to 25th September 2017 highlighting the status of implementation of SDGs in India, with special focus on marginalized groups. AnOnline Poster-Making Competition on SDGs: Agenda 2030, Launch of SDGWatchTN in Tamil Nadu as well as Press Release of Civil Society Report on SDGs in ten different states of India were some of the highlighting events of WNTA/GCAP India’s initiatives of popularising the SDG: Agenda 2030.
Ms. Manshi Singh from Wada Na Todo Abhiyan said: “We urge our leaders to #ACT4SDGs and take urgent action to tackle poverty, inequality and climate change. We can work together to create a better, more fair world. Our future, our children’s future, and the future of our planet depends on it.’’
On 25 September 2015, world leaders agreed to a definitive plan for the planet and its people by adopting 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The SDGs are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. If the 193 governments who signed the SDGs hold to their commitments, the results will be extraordinary. The SDGs could achieve:
- An end to extreme poverty by 2030 that condemns millions of people, especially women and girls, to an early death, poor education and ill health.
- A turning point in the soaring levels of inequality and discrimination.
- An accelerated transition to 100% renewable energy, ensuring policies that take care of people and planet.
Photos and stories from all parts of the world will be aggregated and showcased on www.act4sdgs.org for all to see how people take actions for SDGs.

What: Press Conference on Karwan-e-Mohabbat (a peace walk)

The Karwan-e-Mohabbat set out on September 4 from Assam as a collective response of love, atonement, conscience and justice, to the climate of hate, violence and fear that has enveloped many parts of the country. It traversed eight states, where the members of the Karwan met over fifty families that were targets of hate violence, whether in the form of lynching and mob attacks, Dalit atrocities or violent communal targeting by the police. The states where the Karwan travelled are Assam, Jharkhand, coastal Karnataka, Delhi, Western Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat.
The Karwan found a situation of enormous, settled, everyday fear among Muslims, Christians and Dalits in many parts of the country. It found that they had very little expectation of justice from the state. In many states, it found that the police itself is assuming the tasks of the lynch mob against minorities. It also found very little remorse in the majority community in many places where the violence actually occurred, although at the same time the Karwan was met not just with stones and footwear but with rose petals and tremendous goodwill for its message of peace and love.
In order to share what they observed and felt through this unique journey, members of the Karwan-e-Mohabbat will address both the press and other citizens who are interested, from 3 pm onwards at Press Club of India (Lawn), Raisina Road.

Sciences Po, the leading French university in Social Sciences, is launching a new Bachelor of Arts programme in September 2017. The newly revamped multidisciplinary programme will focus on humanities, civic engagement and distinct regional specialisations.
