Press Conference Ms. Eve Ensler, celebrated playwright, actor and activist

Press Conference 
Today, the human rights violations against women has reached unacceptable level and the recent brutal gang rape of 23-year old girl from Delhi is an example of the kind of violence that young girls and women are facing in different parts of the country  and world- wide .  At least 1 in 3 women in the world is battered or a victim of abuse during her life.
To end the Violence against Women, the One Billion Rising Campaign was launched across South Asia. With the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) 2011 indicating that the incidence of rape increased by 873 percent between 1953 and 2011 or at a rate three times faster than all cognizable crimes put together, the Campaign was jointly launched by a coalition of 25 organizations on 24 Nov 2012 at New Delhi.
Ms. Eve Ensler, celebrated playwright, actor and activist, who gave the call for One Billion Rising Campaign address the Press Conference. The key speakers will share about the Campaign and the build up that is being made across the country, regionally globally towards its finale on 14 February 2013 – when One Billion people across the world will come out, speak out and show their solidarity to survivors of violence.

2.      Kamla Bhasin: Leader of the One Billion Rising Campaign in South Asia; well known  feminist and women’s rights advocate

3.      Abha Bhaiya: Has witnessed and spearheaded the women’s movement since the 80’s; one of the founders of Jagori–a feminist organization in Delhi.She is also founder of Jagori Grameen in Himachal.
4.      Aruna Roy: RTI and social activist committed to decentralization, people’s participation and strengthening democratic expression.
5.      Veda Bhardwaj, associated with The Hunger Project in India, which works with women elected representatives in 8 states to strengthen their leadership.

6.      Dr. Kalpana Viswanath: associated with Jagori Delhi and an expert on women’s safety and gender inclusive cities.
7.      Pamela Philipose – Director Women’s Feature Service and supporter of the One Billion Rising Campaign
8.      Bijayalaxmi Nanda, Associate Professor, Delhi University, associated and supporter of One Billion Rising Campaign
