Dipika Pallikal and Joshana Chinappa created history by winning the first-ever gold medal in squash but disappointment was in store for the four Indian boxers, including Olympic bronze winner Vijender Singh, who had to be content with a silver each in the 20th Commonwealth Games on Saturday.
Dipika and Joshana stole the limelight with their historic feat as they beat Jenny Duncalf and Laura Massaro of England 11-6, 11-8 in the womens doubles squash final on the 10th day of competitions in this edition. It was the first squash medal for India in the Commonwealth Games.
Vijender Singh, Mandeep Jangra, Sarita Devi and Devendro Singh were the other star performers during the day with their silver-winning achievements in the boxing ring while A Arpinder Singh bagged a bronze in men’s triple jump.
P Kashyap stood just a win away from a historic gold while P V Sindhu and RMV Gurusaidutt managed a bronze each in the badminton competition.
Delhi Games gold medallist pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa, too, were on course to defend the women’s doubles title after winning their last-four match at the Emirates Arena.
Rajinder Rahelu and Sakina Khatun claimed a silver and a bronze each in men’s heavyweight and women’s lightweight powerlifting, respectively, as India made a last-ditch effort to boost their medals tally.
Vijender, a bronze medallist at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, was comprehensively beaten 3-0 by England’s Antony Fowler in men’s middleweight 75kg bout at the SSE Hydro Arena.
With the four silver today, India has bagged five medals from boxing with Pinki Jangra having won a bronze after losing her semifinal bout against Michaela Walsh of Northern Ireland in women’s 51kg category on Friday.
In men’s hockey, India came from two goals down to defeat New Zealand 3-2 in the semifinals to set up a summit showdown with holders Australia.
Trailing 0-2 in the 18th minute, India sans regular skipper Sardar Singh were revived by strikes from Rupinder Singh Pal, Ramandeep Singh and Akashdeep Singh, who ensured at least a silver medal.
Saturday’s collection took India’s overall tally to 61 with 14 gold, 28 silver and 19 bronze.
India maintained their fifth position in the medal standings with England topping the charts with a total collection of 161 medals followed by Australia (130), Canada (81) and Scotland (52).
The fifth-seeded Indian pair of Dipika and Joshana made short work of their English opponents with a 11-6 11-8 win in the best-of-three game final.
The Indians looked in some trouble in Game 2 when they trailed 7-2 at one point, but some incredible drop shots from Dipika and Joshana made the win look easy in the end.
Duncalf and Massaro were no match for the absolutely in-sync pair of Joshana and Dipika, who moved rhythmically in the glass show court at the Scotstoun Campus Squash arena.
The English duo played traditional squash with no variety at all and played the doubles match with a ‘singles’ mindset against the Indian players, which seems to have mastered the doubles game.
In boxing, Vijender suffered a knockdown against Fowler as India ended their boxing campaign at the Games on a rather disappointing note.
Besides Vijender, Mandeep Jangra (men’s 69kg), Laishram Devendro Singh (men’s 46-49kg) and Laishram Sarita Devi (women’s 57-60kg) lost their final bouts on Saturday.
To the dismay of the Indian team, Vijender got a knockdown in the first round itself as he failed to thwart a ferocious punch from the Englishman.
Vijender got up in no time but he looked rattled by the blow. Jangra, too, struggled, losing his bout rather tamely, to England’s Scott Fitzgerald 3-0 while suffering three knockdowns.
Sarita lost to Shelley Watts of Australia after a gritty fight in women’s lightweight (57-60kg) category final while her younger brother was beaten by Paddy Barnes of Northern Ireland in the men’s light-flyweight (46-49kg) final.
Devendro was no match for Barnes and the unanimous 3-0 verdict in favour of the Irish reflected that.
Sarita, a former World Championships silver medallist, lost steam in the later stages and was out-punched 3-0.
Jangra, too, struggled, losing his bout rather tamely, to England’s Scott Fitzgerald 3-0.
Kashyap played out of his skin to avenge his loss to England’s Rajiv Ouseph, who had beaten him at the 2010 Delhi Games. Kashyap won 18-21 21-17 21-18.
World Championship bronze winners Jwala and Ashwini notched up an easy 21-7 21-12 win over Lai Pei Jing and Loo Yin Lim.
However, it turned out to be a bitter-sweet day for top seed P V Sindhu as she suffered a heartbreaking loss in the women’s single semifinal match to Michelle Li of Canada.
Sindhu managed to get her act together to beat Malaysia’s Jing Yi Tee 23-21 21-9 in a 34-minute bronze medal contest.
Gurusaidutt, too, earned India a bronze when he eked out a hard-fought 21-15 14-21 21-19 win over Ouseph.
Arpinder Singh gave India its third medal in athletics as he won a bronze in men’s triple jump event to end their campaign.
The Indian athletics team was hoping for a medal from Arpinder after he leapt a brilliant 17.17m in June and he lived upto the expectations by winning a bronze with a best jump of 16.63m at the Hampden Park which was hit by evening rain.
The 21-year-old Arpinder achieved his best jump in his first attempt and could not improved upon the mark in his subsequent five efforts.
He had a series of 16.46m, 16.31m and 16.09m after his first effort while his last two attempts were foul jumps.
In hockey, the Kiwis drew first blood in the second minute with Simon Child taking a neat cross pass to put the ball screeching into the net.
The Black Sticks continued with their fine show and three minutes later, Hugo Inglis fired at the net again but this time it was stopped by the Indian goalkeeper Sreejesh Ravindran.
Indian fullback Rupinder also came up a with a forceful hit at the Kiwi net but goalkeeper Hamish McGregor was alert to put the strike at bay.
The New Zealanders missed a penalty corner in the 10th minute but they did not repeat the mistake when they got the next opportunity, as hard-hitter Nick Haig scored on the rebound to double the lead in the 18th minute.
Indians got their one and only penalty corner in the 27th minute and drag flicker V R Raghunath hit the chest of a Kiwi player on the net.
The on-field referee gave India a penalty stroke as part of obstruction. Rupinder, who took the stroke, gave India their first goal in the 28th minute.
Coming from the bench after a two-minute suspension post a green card, Child missed an open goal in the dying minutes of the first half as the scoreline read 2-1 after 35 minutes.
Achanta Sharath Kamal proved to be no match for Singapore’s Jian Zhan as the Indian was blanked 4-0 in a one-sided men’s singles table tennis semifinal match.
The top Indian paddler lost 11-6 11-6 11-6 11-8 to his 32-year-old opponent from Singapore at the Scotstown Camp.

296 Palestinian children have been killed so far in an IDF operation in the Gaza Strip, UN says. The continued bombardment took 84 lives on Saturday alone, with Israeli PM saying that destroying Hamas’ tunnels is not the ultimate goal after all.
“Children make up for 30 percent of the civilian casualties,” said UNICEF, adding the toll is only rising.“The number of child casualties during the last 48 hours may rise as a number of incidents are pending verification,” it said in a statement.
UNICEF reported that confirmed casualties so far include 187 boys and 109 girls – with at least 203 of them under the age of 12.
Israeli shelling in the Gaza Strip taking the Palestinian toll to 1,712, even as the Jewish state vowed to keep up pressure on Hamas while signaling plans to scale down its three-week long military operation. Nine members of a family were among 30 people killed today in Israeli attacks in Rafah, bordering Egypt, taking the Palestinians toll to 1,712, with more than 9,000 wounded.
The dead included 398 children, 207 women and 74 elderly people, said Dr. Ashraf al-Qedra, spokesman for the Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza.
Meanwhile, Israel today declared dead one of its soldiers who was captured by militants on Friday, triggering a major escalation of conflict and collapse of a 72-hour humanitarian truce, brokered by the US and the UN.
So far 64 Israeli soldiers have been killed and 400 others injured.
Three Israeli civilians and a Thai national also died in rocket and mortar attacks.
Israel has indicated that it may be scaling down its ground offensive in Gaza as its troops pulled out from parts of the coastal strip.
The Israeli army yesterday told residents of Beit Lahiya town in northern Gaza that it was “safe” to return to their homes, as witnesses said troops were seen withdrawing from the area.
“We have told Beit Lahia residents that they may return to their homes. We advised them to avoid explosives placed by Hamas across the area,” the Israel Defence Forces tweeted.
It was the first time troops had been seen pulling back since the start of the deadly 27-day conflict, which has forced up to a quarter of Gaza’s population into exile.
The move came after the army said Israel was “quite close to completing” the destruction of tunnels used to infiltrate southern Israel.
However, later in the day, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel will keep up its military campaign in Gaza for as long as needed and with as much force as necessary.
He said that all options were “on the table”.
“From the beginning, we promised to return the quiet to Israel’s citizens and we will continue to act until that aim is achieved. We will take as much time as necessary, and will exert as much force as needed,” he said in a public address.
But despite the partial withdrawal, Israel’s security cabinet decided against sending representatives to hold ceasefire talks with the Palestinian delegation that had arrived in Cairo yesterday.
The delegation included a representative of Fatah and Palestinian intelligence, with Hamas and Islamic Jihad likely to join it later.

Nepalese Foreign Minister calls on Modi
 
Nepalese Foreign Minister Mahendra Pandey on Sunday paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and briefly discussed some bilateral issues, including hydro-power, trade, energy and security.
The meeting took place at a five star hotel an hour after Modi arrived in Kathmandu on a two-day trip, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to pay a bilateral visit to Nepal in 17 years.
“The talks were held in a very cordial and friendly atmosphere,” Pandey said after the meeting.
“We have to move hand-in-hand in development,” he said.
Pandey said during the brief meeting some bilateral issues including hydro-power, trade, energy and security were covered. Political and cultural issues also came up for discussion.
“He (Modi) speaks less but he is result oriented. During my meeting, I felt whatever he says he believes in doing it,” he said when asked about his meeting with the Prime Minister.
The two leaders also underlined the need for expediting the ongoing projects being implemented under Nepal-India cooperation.
All the leading dailies in Kathmandu published banner headline news today covering Modi’s visit.
“Modi’s visit is a turning page in Nepal-India relations” describes a front page article carried by The Kathmanmdu Post.
Security was tightened in Kathmandu and most of the schools voluntarily announced closure for today and Monday in view of Modi’s visit.
Modi, the first Indian Prime Minister to pay a bilateral visit to Nepal in 17 years, was received at the Tribhuvan International Airport by Prime Minister Sushil Koirala who deviated from protocol for the purpose.
Deputy Prime Ministers Bam Dev Gautam and Prakash Man Singh were also present at the airport.
A colorful ceremonial guard of honour was presented to Prime Minister Modi at the airport with the anthems of India and Nepal being played.
Modi was also offered a 19-gun salute by the Nepal Army.
There was tight security in and around the airport. The route from the airport to the hotel, a drive of about 10 minutes, saw an impromptu line up of the local people who had turned out in large numbers, waving flags and clicking photographs with cameras as well as mobile phones.
During his two-day visit, Modi will be holding talks with his counterpart Sushil Koirala and meet other political leaders. He will also have the rare honour of addressing Nepal’s Constituent Assembly.
Ahead of his visit, Modi had said that he looks forward to working with the Nepalese leadership to forge a new relationship by identifying steps to strengthen bilateral cooperation in key sectors, including trade and investment, hydropower, agriculture and agro-processing, environment, tourism, education, culture and sports.
“I am excited about my visit and pleased that I am able to go there within weeks of assuming office as Prime Minister,” he had said in a pre-departure statement on Saturday.
“I hope my visit will open a new chapter in India-Nepal relations, characterised by more frequent political engagement and closer cooperation across the full spectrum of our extraordinarily broad-based relations, which will serve as a model and catalyst for South Asian partnership for prosperity,” Modi had said.
Describing Nepal as a close friend and neighbour, he had said, “We have had the privilege of being a leading partner in Nepal’s socio-economic development. We are committed to continuing our support to Nepal in its development efforts.”
Modi’s Nepal visit will also unite a youth with his family. 26-year-old Jeet Bahadur, who came in contact with Modi in Ahmedabad over a decade back and was since looked after by him, is travelling with the Prime Minister to Kathmandu to be personally handed over to his mother and elder brother.
“On a personal note, my Nepal visit is very special… Some personal emotions are also attached to this visit.,” Modi had said.
In a series of tweets, the Prime Minister had said, “Years back, I met a child Jeet Bahadur in a helpless condition. He knew nothing, where to go, what to do. He did not know anybody, nor did he understand the language.”
“Guided by God, I started thinking about him. Gradually, he developed interest in studies and playing. He also learned Gujarati language,” Modi had said.
The Prime Minister said sometime back, he was able to locate Bahadur’s parents. “This was possible because he (Bahadur) has six fingers in his foot.”
“Thankfully, we were able to locate his parents. I am glad that the parents would be reunited with their son,” he had said.
During the visit, the two countries are expected to sign agreements in sectors like power. India may also announce economic aid for that country.
The Prime Minister had said that his visit highlights the high priority that his government attaches to relations with Nepal and India’s determination to take our relationship to an entirely new level.
Modi had said that he will have the opportunity to hold detailed discussions with the Nepalese leadership on the entire gamut of bilateral relations.
He had said that he looked forward to working with the leadership of Nepal “to forge a new relationship for the new century between our two rapidly transforming countries.”
Referring to the recent meeting of India-Nepal Joint Commission after a long gap of 23 years, the Prime Minister said it reviewed the entire gamut of bilateral relations and cooperation with a focus on economic relations, trade and connectivity.
“Our ongoing major projects for development of border infrastructure will usher in economic prosperity to people living on both sides of the border and also enhance connectivity,” Modi had said.
During the visit, the two sides will explore ways to further strengthen development cooperation.
Recalling with delight that Koirala had graced his swearing-in ceremony on 26th May, Modi had said it demonstrated the solidarity of the people of Nepal with India and the shared commitment to democracy.
The Prime Minister had also expressed gratitude to the people and the elected representatives of Nepal for giving him the rare honour of addressing the Parliament of Nepal.
“For me, another significance of this visit is that I will have the opportunity of paying obeisance at Pashupatinath Temple on ‘sawan ki somwar’,” Modi had said
PM facilitates reunion of Jeet Bahadur with his family in Nepal
Jeet Bahadur, the boy from Nepal whom the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, had met years ago, was today reunited with his family in Nepal.
Jeet Bahadur’s mother, elder brother, and sister-in-law travelled from their village in Nawalparasi district, to Kathmandu, to receive Jeet Bahadur. He was received by his family in the presence of Shri Narendra Modi.

3rd August 2014, New Delhi: In a symposium conducted in city today, renowned joint replacement surgeons from across the country endorsed the highly advanced and effective Patient Specific Jig technology which is now made available in India for benefit of patients suffering from knee joint disorders. The technology was made available to 10 select knee replacement surgeons in North India for an early user feedback.

10 surgeons from northern India attended the symposium to learn about the early user feedback and patient outcomes of this new technology. Kangana Ranaut Approached For International Film!

Bollywood’s CINESTAR  Kangana Ranaut, who impressed everyone with her performances in ‘Queen’ and ‘Revolver Rani’, seems to have impressed the right people not only in Bollywood, but also on the international cinema scene.

Sources close to the actress state that international filmmaker, Edoardo De Angelis, recently approached Kangana to play the lead opposite actor Massimiliano Gallo for an Italian film. Kangana, who recently returned from the US, where she had gone to study screen-play writing, is in talks with the filmmaker to discuss the role and the script. Though the actress has not given her nod to the project yet, it is quite an exciting offer and speculations are rife that Kangana might take it up.

When contacted Kangana confirmed, “Yes I have been offered the role opposite Massimiliano Gallo in the film but I am still contemplating it.It feels nice that after Queen, producers as such as those onboard Divine Lovers are offering projects to me.I think the European market has opened up for me”.

Kangana Ranaut, who has been in the news recently for back to back hits like ‘Krrish 3’, ‘Queen’ and ‘Revolver Rani’, will be next seen in Aanand L Rai’s ‘Tanu Weds Manu 2’ and Sai Kabir';s Divine Lovers.

Dear Saathis,

With a new government in power, in its first parliament session, a number of campaigns around issues that affect the poor and marginalised have decided to come together in order to hold a public hearing in the budget-cum-monsoon session of parliament. To follow up on this decision, the Pension Parishad, the Right to Food Campaign, and the Rashtriya Mazdoor Adhikar Morcha, the JSA and the NAPM invite you to a public hearing on 4th August, 2014. The Public Hearing will focus on Pensions, NREGA, NFSA, including rations and maternity entitlements. It will be held at the Jantar Mantar, New Delhi.
                                                        
The hearing will also spend some time discussing the changes being made in thelabour laws in favour of the Industry, changing land use and the merciless acquisition of land which is going to have a deep impact on people’s livelihoods, making them socially and economically more vulnerable.

For NREGA, Pensions, NFSA (including rations and maternal entitlements) – we will spend about an hour each giving our testimonies. Following which we will spend about an hour or more on the other issues.

We will invite Members of Parliament and others associated with all these campaigns to participate. We would like at least ten persons to come from each State and national network within each campaign for the hearing, including testimonies. Till now from the confirmations received, we have learnt that the larger mobilisation will be of people from Bihar, Rajasthan and Delhi.

Since the time for testimonies will be very limited, we request you to bringalong as much material as you can in the form of photos, written testimonies reports, etc. Do let us know how many people will be attending. All organisationsand participants will come at their own cost while the campaigns will share the cost of the tent and mike. On the 4th, packed lunch will be provided at a subsidised rate of Rs.20.

On the 5th of August, a meeting of all these campaigns will be organised so that we can build a joint movement across all social sectors in order to strengthen our collective efforts and voices. A note for discussion written by Abhay Shukla of the JSA and of the Right to Life Alliance of Maharashtra is attached. This meeting will take place at Raja Ram Mohan Roy Memorial Trust (Brahmo Samaj) Hall, 12 – Rouse Avenue Lane, (Opp. Gandhi Peace Foundation), New Delhi – 110002.

Since only representatives of different groups and regions from all the campaigns are expected to attend the 5th meeting, we will not make arrangements for accommodation. In case you feel that accommodation is needed on the 4th night, do let us know and we will try to organise accommodation at the Gareebdas Dharamshala near LNJP Hospital.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said developed countries should understand the challenges of poverty in developing nations and their governments’ responsibilities to address them.
Modi conveyed the message to US Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker when they called on him in New Delhi on Friday.
“Prime Minister emphasized the need for developed countries to understand the challenges of poverty in developing countries and their governments’ responsibilities in addressing them when discussions take place in international forums,” a PMO statement said on Friday.
The meeting took place against the backdrop of India taking a tough stance on the issue of foodgrain holding and food subsidy at the WTO talks in Geneva on Thursday night after which the US blamed it for failure of the negotiations.
Asked about this, External Affairs Ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin said the Prime Minister articulated India’s requirement of ensuring that food security is provided for a significant number of people because of the circumstances in which the country is.
“I think the PM is on record to have said that development challenges that developing countries face are something that should be understood by all.
“India, as a developing country, has challenges and responsibility to ensure food supplies to all its people and that is reflected in our stance. That stance takes into account our needs. If other countries have a different stance, we understand their perspectives because they come from a different direction,” he said.
The spokesman added “our direction is determined by our current circumstances which require us to provide food security for a significant number of people and that is what the PM has said.”

Rajasthan Amendments to Labour Law will create many more Bhopal’s Gas Tragedies

The Rajasthan government’s decision to to amend the Factories Act has turned the clock back two centuries for what are acceptable conditions of work in a factory.
The amendment seeks to raise the floor for mandatory registration, of an establishment engaged in a manufacturing process, under the Factories Act from 10 workers to 20 workers. This means that factories employing 19 or less workers would not have legally binding responsibility for the safety of their workers inside the factory. The amendment also undermines the legal protection on hours of work, a weekly off and other rights to decent working conditions.
The struggle for universal coverage under what came to be the Factories Act in many countries was waged first in the 19thcentury. The amendments proposed by the Rajasthan Government thus take us back two centuries.    Following the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy, the Factories Act 1948 was significantly amended to ensure that employers had higher accountability for workers’ safety and health hazards.
The amendment to the Factories Act in Rajasthan comes with amendments to the Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act 1970, the Apprentices Act 1961 and critical clauses of the Industrial Disputes Act 1948.
The amendment to the Contract Labour Act will raise the floor for application of the Act to an establishment that employs 50 or more contract workers (from the present 20 or more as applicable country-wide).  In an environment that widely acknowledges severe under reporting by small and medium enterprises and allows multiple factory licences at the same address, effectively allowing factories within factories, these amendments would in effect allow factories with employment of a 100+ workers to operate entirely outside the protection provided under the Factories Act and the Contract Labour Act.
The amendment to the Apprentices Act provides for a ‘sharing’ of apprentice compensation between employers and the state government, the freedom of employers to terminate apprentices during the apprenticeship and including apprenticeships under categories of temporary and contract workers. Today apprentices are being employed in large numbers in manufacturing to keep wages low and deny workers their legitimate right to freedom of association and collective bargaining. The amendments are aimed at providing a legal cover to this practice. While the government talks of creating skilled and employable workers this amendement effectively puts skilled workers out of the definition of workers and places them in the category of apprentices.
The effort of the Rajasthan’s BJP Government to change the basic framework of labour law in the country is further concretised and its scope widened in the proposal to amend Chapter VB of the Industrial Disputes Act 1948 (IDA). The provisions of Sections 25 of the IDA imbue accountability of employers in employment of workers in establishments with 100+ workers wherein they are required to obtain prior permission of government if they wish to close down the establishment or reduce the number of workers employed. The ID Act lays out clearly the conditions under which an establishment covered under Chapter V B can apply for lay-off, retrenchment or closure, two of which clearly being (i) genuineness and adequacy of the reasons for such action by the establishment and (ii) interests of employed workers. The Government of Rajasthan seeks to raise the floor for coverage under chapter VB from establishments employing 100 workers to those employing 300 workers without providing any rationale based on changes in industrial practice or manufacturing processes over time. By implication all establishments employing 299 or less workers will now be governed under Chapter V A which does not require government approval for termination, retrenchment or layoff of workers or closure of establishment.
The amendments to the ID Act include a detailed definition, of what constitutes ‘go slow’ in an establishment in Schedule V – Unfair Labour Practice. If workers are retrenched, laid-off or terminated for executing a ‘go slow’, that includes ‘work to rule’ and the failure to achieve ‘fixed or average or normal level of production or work or output’, the amendment proposes that the workers will not be eligible for any compensation. Taken along with the amendment to Chapter VB the definition of ‘go slow’ can open the way to retrenchment without compensation and therefore increase the fear of victimisation which today is a palpable threat against the right to form or join unions. The present amendments will also repeal a progressive Rajasthan addition of 1958 wherein the definition of workmen included contract workers. The exclusion of contract workers in computing the number of workers on the rolls of an establishment will make it easier for employers to show their employment numbers below the 299 threshold. The amendments will raise the threshold from 15% of trade union membership to 30% of membership within an establishment for a trade union to be able to demand recognition, thereby significantly eroding trade union rights and paving the way for employer promoted unions. Every one of these amendments represents a fundamental attack on rights of workers to protest unfair labour practice routinely committed by employers.
The amendments proposed by Rajasthan’s BJP Government are most of all in violation of Article 254 of the country’s constitution – upheld through judicial review – which clearly sets out that the power of states to legislate changes, in variance with rights protected by national legislation, are limited to removing difficulties or for easier explanation unless state legislation enhances the rights of citizens.
The framework of development over the last two decades has involved a competition for investment between states through the provision of concession to capital in the form of land grants, tax holidays and in the case of Gujarat even unsecured loans of large sums of monies at virtually no interest have been handed out to private companies. The actions of the Government of Rajasthan now stretch to providing a lower regulatory employment framework that will force down wages and therefore intensify competition between states on this count too.
For over two decades, the labour rights implementation machinery has been in complete disrepair as far as workers rights are concerned. Furthermore provisions such as prior permission from government under Chapter VB of IDA comes through automatically unless government declines permission. The fact remains that in the present environment retrenchment or closure has only been resisted where a democratic union has been able to militate the rights of its membership. Vast numbers of workers are defenceless in the absence of unions.
The actions of the BJP government in Rajasthan are not innocent and restricted to Rajasthan alone. Its action is in tandem with the aggressive efforts of the Union Government, including through the Union Cabinets approval to the Factories Act and Apprentices Act yesterday. This represents a political attack on industrial workers and their fundamental right to form or join unions to defend their rights to safe work places and secure employment.
The New Trade Union Initiative opposes the amendments and calls upon all sections of the working class to build a sustained opposition to them. In pursuance of this the NTUI shall respond to all calls that are already in place to build the widest coalition of trade unions and social movements to defend these fundamental rights of workers.

US GDP grows at 4% in Q2, 2014

Federal Reserve announces further tapering of Asset Purchase Program byanother US $10 billion


The United States GDP advanced 4% in the second quarter of 2014, rebounding from a revised 2.1% contraction in the previous period. Upturns in private inventory investment and exports and an acceleration in personal consumption and investment contributed to better than expected results.

Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) has announced further tapering of its monthly asset purchases by US $10 billion from US $35 billion to US $25 billion on account of surged economic growth in the second quarter. Beginning August, the FOMC will add to its holdings of agency mortgage-backed securities at a pace of US $10 billion per month rather than US $15 billion per month, and will add to its holdings of longer-term Treasury securities at a pace of US $15 billion per month rather than US $20 billion per month. 

According to the advance estimate of Bureau of Economic Analysis, Department of Commerce US, the real GDP in US increased at an annual rate of 4% in Q2 of 2014 as compared to 2.1% decline in Q1 of 2014. This upturn in the percentage change in US real GDP primarily reflected increased personal consumption expenditures, private inventory investment, exports, non residential fixed investment, state and local government spending, and residential fixed investment in the country.

Real personal consumption expenditures increased 2.5% in the second quarter, compared with an increase of 1.2% in the first. Durable goods increased 14%, compared with an increase of 3.2%. Nondurable goods increased 2.5%; it was unchanged in the first quarter. Services increased 0.7% in the second quarter, compared with an increase of 1.3% in the first.

Real nonresidential fixed investment increased 5.5% in the second quarter, compared with an increase of 1.6% in the first. Investment in nonresidential structures increased 5.3%, compared with an increase of 2.9%. Investment in equipment increased 7%, in contrast to a decrease of 1%. Investment in intellectual property products increased 3.5%, compared with an increase of 4.6%. Real residential fixed investment increased 7.5%, in contrast to a decrease of 5.3%.

Real exports of goods and services increased 9.5% in the second quarter, in contrast to a decrease of 9.2% in the first. Real imports of goods and services increased 11.7%, compared with an increase of 2.2%.

Real federal government consumption expenditure and gross investment decreased 0.8% in the second quarter, compared with a decrease of 0.1% in the first. National defense increased 1.1%, in contrast to a decrease of 4%. Nondefense decreased 3.7%, in contrast to an increase of 6.6%. Real state and local government consumption expenditures and gross investment increased 3.1%, in contrast to a decrease of 1.3%.
